You know as opposed to my previous post, it's not too bad.

But, I still wouldna purcgase one, if dollars were available for a bush bike, which I cringe at just the thought of scratching let alone dropping the cunt on rocks. With you leachy, stick to my Belgarda.

I own a GS, bought it new to ride off road, that's all I do with it.

From the beginning I decided that I wouldn't be precious with avoiding scratches & dings. It's protected by the crash bars mostly anyway - a few 'badges of honour' marks here & there just add to the character.
Just one look at it and you know it is being used for what it was designed for - fit for purpose.
Seeing an immaculate 5 year old GS sitting outside a cafe is nice but also speaks volumes about the owner.

I also have a GS. Going to see Oz on the brown stuff rather than last lap on the black stuff.....just need the Covid stuff to foook of before i am to old to do it.

Yes, a bucket-list item to do a lap of the map, off-road too.
Maybe another reason to be fully vaccinated - it could be that interstate travel is only permitted to those that are.

Well seen the Pan America for the first time last week. I still couldn't see myself owning one and to be honest I wouldn't pay $32000 for any adventure bike no matter what name is on the tank. I am hearing good reports about them but I have to ask does a adventure bike really need a 150hp. Anyway a few photos I took last week at Mackay Harley Davidson in Queensland.

Well does a roadbike need 200hp.....the answer is no in reality but hey like most motorcyclists if it can go fast and has the potential to kill me, i am interested.

    Thanks for the pics Choco.
When looking at the left side it makes me wonder why they haven’t either made the castings smoother or covered the engine with shielding, (ala KTM) whereas this thing looks like a giant mud catcher.

In short IMHO opinion no. I spent 5 years riding RTW on a Triumph Tiger 1200. 135HP 122NM. Fully loaded and 2up. Rode in some very, very harsh places and I can say I rarely ever used anywhere near the power. In fact, I have just built my next overland bike and went down to a Triumph 800 purely to save an extra 50kg in weight which to me is far more important that power. Still 95HP so plenty of power if needed.

Well today i spent my day on a Pan America demo bike. I am in the planning stage of heading to Steep point and throwing around some options regarding the possibility of updating my Bmw 1200gs LC . Loved the bike, that motor is fabulous on the road and a fair bit stronger than my GS at the top end. The suspension is better on my Bmw but the auto lowering at stop is very welcome on the HD. The off-road capability is certainly with the Bmw at my experience level, the lower centre of gravity being a major factor. Bmw low speed off road is marginally better. Have ridden a 1250 Bmw but will do it again after riding the HD. Its a very good bike and pretty tempting. Wade this could be your que to tempt me....

Yes Steve and for me that's a very slight negative.

Cheers GG i can only ride the Triumph around the block basically and the current shipment is sold out. I have ruled out the KTM as its a lot more dirt oriented than i could ever exploit. I need to consider that we are still going to be on the tar to get to the dirt longer than dirt to tar. Both the Kato and the Trump are fooooken tall mothers as well with 21inch fronts not helping the situation. Some things on the Trump scare me for a adventure bike....things like blind spot detection in the mirrors, how much is that going to cost when you smash a mirror first time you park it in the bushes? Have ridden my mates GS1250 but going to grab another ride on his in the next few weeks. This Pan America is certainly not out of the picture just yet.

I know blokes who have been riding big-bike ADV for years, and the same blokes are dyed in the wool "Harley-bashers", and even they have conceded that the Pan-Am is a really good thing.

Jayman they aint wrong and considering this is HD first attempt its very close. I will admit to being a sceptic when i heard they were bringing a adventure bike out but half fool me. It hasn't won me over yet though....

So HD  are now bringing out a version of the Pan American with the 975 sportster motor. Not sure about the specs but it certainly will generate some interest in the mid size adv segment. Could be a good thing.

Yes i think that if they don't just do a motor swap and improve or update a few minor things it could be a good bike. The local Harley Dealer told me that they have sold very few Pan America to existing or previous HD owners...these are new victims to the Harley trap.

    No , not for me.
Probably a good bike. But I’d rather a KLR 650 for nearly a third of the price.
