Met the owner today Steve , who has done 400000klm on his Sporty. Yes that is correct 400k! I did read about the bike sometime ago on the forum but cant find the article. Morgan and Wacker had the bike and story on their Facebook as well i am told. If anyone can steer me in the right direction to find the article i would be apprecitive. Lovely man who rides a victory now very quickly!

Just joined the forum, went looking around, and found people had been talking about me!
Still got the old Sporty, 31 years now, but doing more miles on the Victory.
Went to talk to my local independent shop, Farrows Customs at Nambour (great shop) about a repaint on the tank, 29 year old custom flames, and they didn't want to spoil such classic patina!  So it stays a rat for a few more years.

    On My current Harleys
    2014 Fat Bob - 97,000km
    2011 Deluxe - 10,500km

    On My previous Harleys:
    2010 Street Bob - 96,000km (Sold)
    2010 Fat Fob - 22,000km (Written Off)

I probably have another 250,000km spread across a couple of Jap bikes, a BMW & a Ducati.

Harleys are really easy to work on and cheap to maintain on so the miles clock up easily.

Been riding powered rigs since I was 8 [along time ago], big rig has 77k since June 2017 and the Sporty put 12k on that in 18months! Live to ride as they say..lol, shudder to think if I added the Jap Slappers over the years :-)

Put 179,800 kms on an '86 Softail between '86 and '94. Original top and bottom end, still running sweet when I sold it.

Have only put 15,000 kms on the current '12 Widey.

Hi Pauly, I was kinda wondering if it was you.  The other candidate was a bloke on a nice stock Heritage Soft tail who tried  to follow the Victory down through the Dulong esses, that I later met at a party in Brisbane.
You aren't gonna see me in the mornings any more, sold my 60 acres on the creek at Obi last week, moved to this old 2 classroom country school I bought on a couple of acres at the edge of a little country town, retired. Gonna be riding different backroads from now on, with a lot more of it on the old Sporty. It was nice to see you out on the road so many mornings.

Sure.  This is one from the pro photo session that Morgan and Wacker put together, before posting it on their website along with the bike history I wrote for them.  The new owners at Wackers took them down when they redid the site in early 2017.  I should give photo credit to Matt Black, he did a great job on them.

Don't doubt the sportster is run in PB.
Just curious if it is still original pistons and rings etc (highly unlikely)....you know, that sort of stuff. And if it aint what has been done to keep it going.
Put 200,000 ks on a Guzzi I had from 1984 till about 2017 but did a bit of work on the engine to keep it going that long and it got abused doing a lap of Aus in 86.
Some modern vehicles go for astronomical mileages before anything major has to be done to them compared to the shitters from back in the day.

Sorry FC my error in not explaining myself correctly, what i meant was he has well and truly given it a thorough beating judging by the way he can twist the grip on that victory.

Not a lot, considering its now 31 years, with a lot of the mileage being on dirt, and that I used to run dirt drags (top street bike Aratula 1990).  Had to lightly hone the bores and fit new rings at 90,000 kms, they were glazed. Full engine rebuild at 220000 km, 1st rebore, Crane cams fitted then, new crank pin, new lifters.  I pulled the motor out of the frame  pulled the gearbox out, walked in to Morgan & Wackers, put it down on the counter  said fix it  send me the bill. They did a good job.  It needs work now, pretty rattly, but it did spend 3 days underwater in 2012? and I started it up after just draining out the water, hosing out the sand and gravel and spraying a lot of WD40 and diesel around, with 5 oil and filter changes over the next 2 days.
It's  been the gearbox that's caused trouble, last year of the 4 speed, 1200cc. Chewed countershaft 3rd at 40000km, chewed it again at 80000, then I started putting Andrews gears in.  These last 120000 kms.  I've  got good at rebuilding the gearbox now, its all Andrew's gears and shafts, and has the real smooth shifts you get from spot on gear shimming.
Since I stopped running dirt drags I've run pretty high gearing, 21/40 sprockets for relaxed 120 kph country road cruising, so I think I contribute to pitting the 3rd gears by lugging it in 3rd in town. I keep it because its like an old dog you can't bear to put down, no one else would take care of it.  Running points, after the electronic ignition started to fail when riding the sand roads in the Pilliga Scrub.
Does it sound like I like it?
