Tri-Bar LED on 09 NT

Sad story short, i've had my Night Train 3 weeks now, and of those 3 weeks, it's rained all but 2 dayz.  Lucky for me i got a Poker Run in 1 of those days.

Ordered a Tri-Bar LED Tail Lamp from the states the other week and turned up while i was out at work so i thought i'd chuck it on seeing the rain and cyclones up this way has killed any chance of going for a ride.

First big mistake i made was not realising that maxi-fuse = main fuse.  So i thought d/c'n the negative terminal on the battery was the right thing to do .

After about 3 minutes of complete deafening alarm noise in a garage, and after trying every key position on the bike, the only thing that'd stop it was reconnecting the terminal and turning the ignition off on the bike.

So then i d/c the maxi(main)-fuse.  Have to turn the bike iginition to on, then off, and unplug the fuse b4 the alarm system activates in like 5 seconds.

First tip would be when disconnecting pins 19a and 19b, the small indicator wires, it's much easier done if u unscrew the circuit/pin board from the tail light bracket.  There's small locking clips underneath the plugs that can be easily pry'd open with a small screw driver.

Next pulling the bracket out and installing the new bracket can be a bit tight so loosening the bolts on the outside of the rear fender infront of the indicators gives u a bit of room to play.  Socket set with an extender makes the job of unscrewing the inside bolts holding the bracket on alot better to.  Mine were really tight.

All in all it was an easy install and if a bonehead like me can do it, anyone could.  Pretty pleased with the results.

Hey there NYTRN, old thread but thats what i was doing today, trying to fit in the tri-led onto my NT. well Im usually pretty ok with a spanner but this had me give up halfway thru. I got stuck with removing the 2 by 2 inside bolts in the fender. with the tyre on and limited space and not up on a lift it just got the better of me. one bolt either side so tucked it towards the rear i just couldnt get in there. have socket sets but its not a clear line of sight............where did I go wrong mate?

Hey Volvi, I fitted one to my bike late last year, I know those bolts are frigging tight, but I got there in the end. Try finding a thread I started after I fitted mine, I gave a blow by blow account how I fitted mine. It just takes time & patience mate, fairly simple fit up in the end. It would make it easier if you have a bike lift though to allow the rear wheel to come down further. I didn't worry about removing any fuses or disconnecting battery when I did mine, I just didn't switch on ignition until job was done.

I just found my old post, you will find it in workshop general discussions, dated January 10 this year. It was quicker to find my post using the search function on this site, anyhow, good luck to you & anyone else attempting to fit this type of tail light.

I did mine with a shifter and absolutely no clue as to what I was doing. It took me a while and after a lot of swearing and carrying on, I finally got it. Didn't disconnect the maxi fuse. Just stupidly persistant. Those bolts were a prick to get the shifter on.

These can be a real PITA. Did one yesterday with a mate on his bike, and two of the four hex head bolts that hold the new light cradle in were just spinning and would not come out, Had to undo and loosen the whole friggin guard and undo the two nuts behind the side rails to get the old cradle out with the inner brackets still attached. Nothin like wasting time on a H-D hey lads.

That explains why one nut I did manage to get the spanner on just kept spinning to no avail. oh frakk does it mean I should take it into a workshop to have it done or start trying to work out how to loosen the rear fender altogether.

Well I ended up doing it all the long way round. I removed the rear fender completely as I wanted to do a clean up inside fender and all other places I can reach when off. So worked on installing the kit from an upside down position lol. It all worked out and those horrible bolts were a breeze to get off having full accessibility. It was a bit tricky re-assembling on my own balancing this item with that whilst inserting the bolts, you know what I mean. I had a chrome kit ready to replace all those bolts which came out looking good and pleased with the overall job. But definitely the long way around.
