From what I remember at the time, they had to modify the Shovel frames in the FX series to fit the slightly taller Evo motor. Not the other way around.
They didn't have to alter the FXR/S frames, because although they originally had Shovel motors in 82 and 83 when they were called the Super Glide II series, they had been designed to have Evo motors.

Makes my mouth drool with talk like that Dave, like walking around the lolly shop.
When I started looking for another bike in Nov 06 I was looking for a Shovel, 83 on, Widey preferred but FLH at a pinch. Missed out on one in Ballina and then there was just none to be found. Then my Heritage came up on the Trading Post and I rang the guy. He'd only posted the ad 10 minutes before I saw it. Saw it that weekend and it was right. As much as I had been one of those "See no Evo, Hear no Evo Ride no Evo" blokes I had to repent. (Shit, I've still got one of those patches too!!) As it stands I'm not getting rid of the Heritage, but if ever I have the bucks, a Shovel stablemate will be on the cards.

Nice bike and it is rare just due to the fact that there weren't too many made and even less still in existance but not as the owner explained.

It's a common thing where a buyer gets told bullshit as part of the selling process and continues to pass on that wrong information to whoever will listen or to future buyers.

I sold a 58 Corvette as a favor for a neighbour a few years ago and they told me that it was all-original and numbers correct only when I put the numbers to the test and did a close inspection I found that virtualy nothing was original.

The owner was devistated as they had owned it for 20 years believing all that time that it was original.

Either way it is a nice bike.

84.5 fxef shovel fatbobs with that exact paint job were sold new in austalia
my mate bought one new in 84 (someone had to buy the new ones, else where would the used ones come from?)
    nothing special there
was a nice bike in its day, and I still like them now
primary leaked like mad, as it was a full oil bath evo clutch(84.5 - 89 style), but with the sealing capability of a drip feed shovel(as in none)
I had an fxsb, but was early 84(my appreciation of belt drives started early)

ahhh what a late reply this is,,,,, yes l am the owner of the glide you see in the photos and it was'nt that long ago that l was informed that my bike is on the net , what a surprise!!  and yes it did win best shovel that day  !!

l bought the bike a number of years ago , of a importer who deals only in original bikes the only thing missing on this bike was a key to start it. After searching the web l located a new original key that matched my switch and delivered to me for 16 bucks back to original condition.

History , one owner in Kansas U.S 22.3 K miles built on 15-5-1984  one of only 445 produced in this configeration ,conformation from H D .

Yes it is the first of the evo swing arm frames gussests under seat post with holes in them to remove rear rocker cover allen heads bolts throgh the frame of the evo motor ,extra gusset at the rear of the frame RHS just above pillion foot peg extra gusset LHS near primary

Wet clutch big brakes '85 fxef  this may not be the last shovel , may not be rare , but it is unuseal   to me its a gem .

thank you Cris ,for your help

l've tried eiher side of 84 but no luck so far.  The front muffler seems to be an odd ball for its the only muffler that l know of that has two factory dents in it , one at the top so it clears the foot rest the other at the tip so it clears the frame......... 84 was a strange year......

thanks again ride free    regards john

Nice to see these bikes being discussed as I have  one now. Mileage of 5000 miles appears to be correct, sadly paint isnt. Just got rego for her yesterday. Really tight and sweet bike but would love to chase up the original parts missing. Have the seat which has been fitted since this pic, still chasing some OEM parts.

Also got a 85 coming but its a long way from stock, with big S&S motor etc but have the original short block.
