Trickle Charger Connection

I actually put this on the wrong forum page, sorry. But here goes.

Hi Again and many thanks for you're input to you all, As i wasn't to flash when i wrote my question yesterday,it may have been misread,so i am sorry about that.

I have a Optimate 111 trickle charger   http://www.tecmate.com/optimate3_detail.php   of which i have had for a couple of years,I also have the fused negative and positive connectors that can be hardwired to the bikes battery, so that i can just plug the Optimate into it without having to remove the battery all the time to charge it up and keep it topped up for when i am able to hit the road.

But that is where i am unsure of what to do,as i know the positive goes to the positive side of the battery, but the earth (negative) does that go to the negative side of the battery terminal or do i have to attach that to some part of the bikes chassis???

As i have heard if you connect a trickle charge incorrectly it will fry the electrics? And i will be totally honest,on my old bonneville you just connected it to the battery terminals, but my 08  low rider has all the computer stuff of which i am unsure.

Another question if someone knows the answers, apparently i have to remove the main fuse before i even disconnect the battery,is this true or false?

If anyone can help and point me in the right direction or give me the correct way to do it all without screwing up my electricals, it would greatly be appreciated,as i have no idea of what is right and what is wrong and i would hate to learn the hard way

Again i thank you all for your replies so far and taking the time to reply.

    Cheers

I have installed a similar charger to my 08 Fatboy. Connected directly to the battery and hid the other end behind the coil cover. Not 100% sure if this is right but I have had no problems since installing over 6 months ago.

Hey CV8-S1, many thanks for your help as it is much appreciated.

I have removed the battery successfully and without getting the alarm to go of and will wire it up like you said, again many thanks for your help.

PS is there any special way of putting the battery back into the bike without getting the alarm to go off?? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

    Cheers.

From memory I just reconnected the battery the same way that it was undone.

I had battery tender leads permenantly connected to the Sportster, I just connected the positive terminal directly to the battery and the negative to where the negative wire connects to the motor. I had it on there for about 6 months and I used to charge it during the week, that worked fine. I bought the same unit for the Dyna just haven't put it on yet.

I didn't remove the main fuse before disconnecting the battery to connect the tender leads.  From memory, when you disconnect the battery the alarm won't go off if you have the key turned to ignition.
