Rann's Tour ad branded hypocritical by Xenophon

SA Senator Nick Xenophon has attacked Premier Mike Rann as hypocritical for featuring himself in a taxpayer-funded ad for the Tour Down Under.

The full-page newspaper advertisements featured the State Government logo and smiling pictures of Mr Rann and cycling superstar Lance Armstrong.

"Bring on 2010," Mr Rann writes in a personal message in the centre of the advertisement.

Senator Xenophon praised the Tour as a "magnificent event" but questioned the tone of the adverts.

"Why do we have to have taxpayer funds to run a full-page ad featuring the Premier's face saying 'well done'? I just don't know whether taxpayers have to pay for what many would see as thinly disguised party political advertising," he said.

Mr Xenophon said he recalled that in 2001, Mr Rann - then the Opposition leader - pledged to stamp this type of advertising out and warned the public that "if you see a politician's face in a taxpayer-funded ad, it's party political".

Should Rann have stayed out of the ad? Vote in our poll on the lower right of this page and have your say below

A Hansard extract from June 19, 2001 records Mr Rann telling State Parliament that "we all know that when we see a politician on a taxpayer-funded ad, it is just a cheap way of doing the party ads."

At the time, Mr Rann also backed Senator Xenophon's call for new laws banning the use of taxpayers' money for advertising which gave "an advantage to a political party", saying in media release that "I'm quite happy to take a knife to the spin doctors".

Opposition Leader Martin Hamilton-Smith accused Mr Rann of having "one standard in Opposition and another in Government".

"In Government, the Premier is hooked on using taxpayers' money to promote himself like a junkie looking for their next fix," he said.

But a spokeswoman for Mr Rann, in a faxed statement, said Mr Xenophon and the Opposition "could not resist going negative about the greatest sporting achievement in our state's history".

"The Premier, as the head of the State Government, out of common courtesy wanted to thank the riders and their teams, (race director) Mike Turter and his team, the people raising money for cancer and every South Australian for their fantastic contribution," the statement said.

"He makes no apology for the Government advertising in this way."

THEN THERE ARE THE LETTERS COMMENTS.........................

No one will deny that the TDU was a magnificent event, but when it comes to telling people about it, why don't we see the people who REALLY made it happen like Mike Turtur and his team of workers, not political parasites like Rann and Lomax-Smith.

Rann's presidency of the ALP is over and so is the TDU. Do you reckon he might focus on doing something for South Australia for a bit? More importantly, do you think we'd notice if he did?

Things must be looking a bit quiet in Canberra. Good old Xylophone has suddenly developed an interest in state matters again, albeit petty ones.

Media Mike utilising the Tour Down Under for spin purposes. Is anybody really surprised? Where there's a favourable camera opportunity, there's our Clayton's Premier angling for a photo. Unless of course he has to face tough questions about health, education, water, transport (nice to let the 90 odd new road rules come into effect with obscurity) etc, in which case, he disappears faster than a rabbit down a hole. Maybe Mike could do us all a favour and stay in the said hole. Bring on 2010 indeed.

That wasn't the "greatest sporting acheivement in our state's history". That was the Crows back to back premierships in 1997-98. Most of us managed to miss the TDU, good luck to those who enjoyed it, but BRING ON THE FOOTY.

As a State chauvinists Rann reminded me of Goebels at the 1936 Berlin Olympics the way he was strutting around as if the event was his personal property. It is disapointing that as the leader of this State he places such priority on these circuses to attract attention to himself. While he might have won the hearts and minds of cyclists and caterers he still has a long way to go to impress the majority of the people in this State, many of whom voted for him at the last election and are looking for performance in more important fields.

Mike Rann was an embarassment to SA by the way in which he was seen with Lance Armstrong on so many occasions. I certainly support Lance Armstrong and his stance on cancer treatment and so on and also the Premier supporting this, but not the way he has done it. It is enough to put people off.

RANN knows that even hard core ALP voters can't stand him, he is an embarrassment for both the ALP and South Australia. He should know by now that every time he appears in the media, most viewers see an arrogant man, out of touch with the dramatic problems of our society and a man that has deliberately deprived ALL South Australians of valued civil liberties via his unnecessary crimes Acts. His appearance at the great 'Tour Down Under' demeans the event becuaes it is RANN who is the 2010 born to be looser.

We heard last year about the need to keep politcs out of sport during the Olympics, even cricket came under the spotlight about overseas Test tours and the need to keep politics out of the sport. If any one had won the right to have a headline photo with Lance Armstrong it was Mike Turtor not Media Mike Rann. Whilst I applaud the Tour Down Under -even if I have no interest in it- I do not support any politican using any sporting event to promote themselves. To do so is to degrade the sport and to imply that the politican did all the hard work to get the sporting event in place.

Forget the talk about political advertising. They all do it - and complaining about it isn't going to solve any problems. Xenohpon is just trying to self publicise himself here. How about the hypocrisy of the poor cycling environment in Adelaide? When was the last time any of the pollies rode to work (during peak hour or otherwise) and saw just what a sorry and dangerous state cycling is in Adelaide? How about making a stand on a real issue xeno, rather than political grandstanding? Wherever you go in this city, cars have absolute priority verses all other modes of transport - including pedestrians. A city of machines that dictate what we can do with ourselves. Cycling comes a distance third with dangerous or non-existent cycle paths, poor lashing-post facilities, poor driver education, and so on.

I found a statement from Rann in 2000 and I quote "In our community meetings South Australians tell us over and over that no amount of spin, or PR stunts, or advertising campaigns or 'special events' can give this government the 'human face' the Premier¿s Christmas message hoped to achieve. It is not just that, all of last week and before we have had constant advertising spoken by Media Mike about the bycycle race. Since when do we need taxpayer funded adverts by the premier about an event that has a heap of media already. The Premier should be busy doing his job, not doing commercials!! That is what we pay him for. And the taxpayer should not be paying for sporting adds.

Whether the ad is polital advertising or not I find it refreshing that our Premier is talking to the people via the media. When there is something that I need to know about (whether it's good news or bad) I'd rather hear it from our leader than one of his staff.

The Govt couldn't afford, forgot or couldn't be bothered to inform us about the changed road laws, things we really NEED to know about. But they can find $$ for self promotion. It was embarrassing at the TDU to see/hear Jane L-S and the Prem lurking around at every event and photo op. Interstate visitors around us were saying we must be a hopeless lot if we need the Govt to do everything for us. SA the mummy state.

Rann's obviously grasping at straws if the best he can do is to create a thinly veiled link between the TDU, Lance Armstrong, cancer, and his performance as Premier. Why not, Mr Rann, why not bring on 2010? If you're so egar, call the election early!

Could he at least apologise for making us having to be confronted with his seemingly increasingly ugly face every week? If he is going to waste tax-payers money at a time of financial uncertainty the least he could do is have a bit of nip-tuck to get rid of the frown lines that have accumulated over the last 7 years of him being in office. Lets keep SA beautiful, get rid of Rann.

"Bring on 2010" - wtf does this politicised statement (referring to the state election) have to do with the TDU and the magnificent event that it is??? I'm content with Rann putting his own mug in the photos - this is what we've come to expect from a media tart obsessed with his own image - but to promote the Labor Party as better alternate Government outiside an election period and with taxpayers' dollars is disgraceful. Rann should be held to account and repay the money outlayed for this shameless ad.
