whats better for a s & s super e? it has a foam washable one on now but could do with replacing,

I would go the K&N washable.

Use one now and love it.

Just need to keep it clean though.

Do mine every 2000 km.

I guess it also depends on what Housing that you have , Can you use a K&N style Element with your curant Air Cleaner set up.

Yep, agree with you on the deterioration problem. I usually change the filter every 3d time because of that, should have mentioned it before.. As far as the oil getting through, I found that this wasn't much of a problem. Used to get a lot more with the crankcase breather set-up that came stock. I still prefer them to the paper ones though, that's just my 2 bob's worth.
