A Handlebar question

I have a 2007 Softail FXST with standard bars, I have tilted them back slightly, but being a bit of a short arse, I find I am still uncomfortable and over stretched reaching the bars, and bad backs don't help.

Would I be better changing the risers or can anyone point me  to a set of bars that Reach back a little more? I only need about another 50-75mm. I dont want to go the full ape hanger bit.

    Hi Banjo
    there are different options.....

Need to consider if just pulling the bars back will put the hand/ wrist position at a comfortable angle for you. Risers will not necessarily give you the pull back you require.

It more than likely will mean new bars which begs the bigger question, which style...... There are plenty of pars with different pull backs available and comfort will depend on the individual.. T Bars will feel different to the stock bars due to the wrist position, so trying them out installed on a bike will be the most effective. Others like westerns etc.

We usually make bars to suit the individual as this ensures the fit. Unless you can try a set of bars out on a bike, then it will still be a bit of a gamble.

You could always try a reach seat that is supposed to push you forward a little?

    Regards

    Hi Banjo48.

I have the same difficulty of the lack of distance between my arse and the ground (I'm short too).

I also have an 07 RK Classic and I found the same problem with the standard bars. I bought the HD "reduced reach" bars, which bring the handles about 65mm further back. Made all the difference. I can reach the bars comfortably AND put my bum against the back of the seat.

The only problem I had was that the new bars required the wiring to go inside the bars. Although I didn't have to lengthen the wiring, it was really painful having to re-pin the plugs. Can be done, just fiddly.

Check out the HD accessories book and see what they have on offer for the Softail.

when l had a heritage softail it had westerns on it , l was leaning forward a bit to much, didnt want to lash out on bars to find l still wasnt happy , l bought a set of 4.5 inch pull back risers it was the cheaper way of moving the whole thing toward the rider about 50-60mm cost $45 off the net that was 3 years back but l still see em advitised at around that price..

As a follow up, I ended up changing the risers to 61/2" and all I can say is wow! its perfect now! feels like the bike actually "fits" me now.
Cannot believe the difference it feels now.

ness flat tracker bars have alot of pull back but r alot lower, t bars or drag bars will probably end up to far forward for ya, westerns might suit better theyre a bit more like flstf bars

if you get bout 30mm of 5/16 unf all thread n a couple of nuts take the screws out the side of the top tree lock nut the thread in then screw the turn signal on with 1 nut this is a cheap mod that looks good when doin a bar change.
