    Holy Motherf*****g Shit Dave,
Ok, could be worse, you could be looking at your flywheels smiling at you. Yep case can be welded,
your Shovel shop should know who can do the job. The timing plate I think is just a coincidence, Just
God F*****g with your brain. Breather hole will have to be bored to size by someone who knows what they are doing, and by the look of the pinion gear from the photo I'd be inclined to replace all gears. Pinion shaft should be ok, have it checked anyway. If you are lucky the barrels will be untouched. Gravity should have kept bits at the bottom. Scoring in the barrels usually happens from top down (loose bits I mean.)
Scenario looks like this to me. 1- lifter shits itself, cam is now hammering not lifting said same. Lifter roller says,
Bitch slap me and i'll hurt you. Drops its guts into the timing chest and takes out everything. I hope not much went past the breather into the bottom end. Cross fingers.
Oil pump is suspect as well, don't sweat that one, I've got one spare. Cam and all timing innards, case repair, maybe replace oil pump. Mate, looks like you're down for a few weeks. (depending on financial situation of course.)
Got to go mate, early start. Back on line tomorrow about 12.40pm. If you're online go to the bar.
    Cris.

    Hi Dave,

Asked him to recommend someone in Vic for welding, Keep you posted.

    Hi Dave,
My mate said the only bloke he'd trust with a job like that in Vic was John Trease,
of John Trease Performance. Haven't got a number for him but I'll hunt and see.
Do you need a clutch hub puller? ,I can lend you my one, it's been modified so
it's got lots of holes to pull all sort of things.
    Regards,
    Cris

Shit Dave I was just about to email you to see if you had found out what was wrong but all the horror is revealed here!

Anything can be repaired as long as you can find the right guy to do it, did you see those cases that Hawg had repaired!!! If they can be fixed I'm sure yours can be but cost may make a new set of cases an option.

    Good luck in your quest!!

    Hi Dave,
Once the case is fixed are you putting it back to stock? or mucking around seeing as everything's apart (I mean 86 stroker, lighten flywheels, etc.)

    Hi Dave,

Gives you the tom tits that someone has put an INA in there to replace the Torrington at some stage.  As I remember it, Harley decided that there was a possibility of the rollers in the Torrington to ride up on each other with wear. So in 92 they changed to the caged INA bearing. Little did they realize that they were creating a time bomb, the cages wore out and the bearings just fell out. The design of the Torrington kept the bearings from falling out even when worn. And by that time you knew something was wrong without major damage occuring. I never thought the bearing would be at fault with your Widey being a 1980. It now explains the hammered look of the cam lobe. The bushing in the cam cover would also need to be replaced just to be on the safe side.  I've had no replies yet about Trease, let  you know as soon as I do. Glad to hear barrels are OK, hope the pump held everything else. Praying the bottom end just needs a cleanup and crankpin assembly is OK .

    Regards,

    Cris

    Good to hear Dave,
As you said, the term genius is often mentioned when talking about Trease. Sounds like the Widey is going to get some good care. She'll be good for another decade or two unlike the Twinkies. By the way, the bloke who owned my Heritage was quoted 8,500 to fix her, and that was by someone who knew what to do and wasn't a rip off artist. If he'd taken it to the Stealer he would have paid heaps more and not known who worked on it. The previous owner was not mechanically inclined and preferred to sell it "as is". The same bloke did my bottom end as luck would have it, Branko Built Cycles would be one of the three top Harley blokes in OZ . 10 k to buy and 4 to fix, parts included, (mind you it did take 8 months, but I have 3 sprogs under 13, and it's difficult to gap and install things on the kitchen table when the wife gets in the way because she wants to cook dinner.)
Have fun chasing sheep on the FLH.
    Regards,
    Cris

Snooping around this department I found this thread very interesting. All I can say is, what shitty luck, but you are right going to Trease, they have featured a story on him before in either Live to Ride or Heavy Duty. A few years ago, but the name has always stuck with me. Over here in SA, we have Hoody who is also a wizz on motors. Looking forward to an update Dave. On the positive side you have had Toni Childs rubbing your leg, lucky bugga.
