ok , so how far into the assembly will i need to get into , to take out the shaft cover and put pedal back on
That's a good question as I have never even seen one of those shaft covers but my guess is not too far.
I'm guessing that the cover is only a slip on but then again I've never seen one of those collar thingymajiggys.
Why not try unscrewing the collar and see what happens??
My return spring just slips over the shaft so I dont know what the collar on your setup is attached to.
Maybe this will help:
Hi Seaeagle,
Good idea to start a new thread, though I don't think Kymbo minded chatting about your Shovel. There's a few of us that have a soft spot for them.
As ShovelnTC said, that cover is not one i've seen before. For all intents and purpouses it may have come out of a bloody washing machine. The kicker shaft as you can see in ShovelnTC's diagram is pretty simple, and Ii'd go along with his idea of unscrewing it, pulling it etc to get it out. Just check for a grub screw or anything like that first. My guess is that it's just been pushed in. As soon as you get rid of it , slip the kicker in and tighten the bolt and you're done.
The next trick is to actually kick the bugger to life.
What carby are you running?
Regards,
Cris.
Hey,
If it's going and you're riding, that's the life. The good thing about the kickstarter is you've got a back-up. Before I put a kicker on my 81 I had to push start it a couple of times. I'm glad I was 26 then becouse I'm sure as hell not pushing anything now.
OK Mate, You may want to change over to the new style kicker, it sits a lot closer to the bike. Here are a few pics of my old Shovel to show you.
Hi Kymbo,
Definition of Electric start Shovelhead: An electrical piece of equipment guaranteed not to work when you need it. Adds a lot of weight and useless wiring to a Harley. Wish I had the bucks to put a kicker on my Heritage.
Not only callouses on your thumb mate, sometimes comments come back to byte you in the ass. i used to get a lot of shit from a mate in Sydney about my "boat anchor". He rode a kawathingy XPZRFT 1100zzszit. One day coming back from a bike show at Seven Hills pub I had enough. We pulled up to a set of lights and I said "put your money where your mouth is!!!" We knew the cops were all at the show or around it ( Bandidos bike show 3 years after Milperra, cops were still a bit toey.) Lights turned green and we were off, by the time he'd gotten to 3d I was in 4th and off by 4 bike lengths. He clocked me at 167 before the road came to a T and I had to slow down, but I was still in front by 1 bike length. Mind you, his top speed and 6 gears would have eventually shat on me, but off the line I had him. We got back to his place and I chucked him the keys, he came back 1/2 an hour later with a grin from ear to ear. Bought himself a Harley as soon as he could afford to. A softail custom, lecky start only, Boy I gave him shit about kickstart of the thumb. Bastard's having fun now I have an 89n with no kickstat.
Here's a pic of both bikes together.

Seaeagle,
if you have a look at the pics of Ink's bike on his intro forum, you'll see his also has the later style kicker, I reckon they not only sit closer but look better than the other.
