That's a good question as I have never even seen one of those shaft covers but my guess is not too far.

I'm guessing that the cover is only a slip on but then again I've never seen one of those collar thingymajiggys.

Why not try unscrewing the collar and see what happens??

My return spring just slips over the shaft so I dont know what the collar on your setup is attached to.

    Maybe this will help:

    Hi Seaeagle,

Good idea to start a new  thread, though I don't think Kymbo minded chatting about your Shovel. There's a few of us that have a soft spot for them.

As ShovelnTC said, that cover is not one i've seen before. For all intents and purpouses it may have come out of a bloody washing machine. The kicker shaft as you can see in ShovelnTC's diagram is pretty simple, and Ii'd go along with his idea of unscrewing it, pulling it etc to get it out. Just check for a grub screw or anything like that first. My guess is that it's just been pushed in. As soon as you get rid of it , slip the kicker in and tighten the bolt and you're done.

The next trick is to actually kick the bugger to life.

    What carby are you running?

    Regards,

    Cris.

    Hey,

If it's going and you're riding, that's the life. The good thing about the kickstarter is you've got a back-up. Before I put a kicker on my 81 I had to push start it a couple of times. I'm glad I was 26 then becouse I'm sure as hell not pushing anything now.

its a shit feeling when ya strandard at any age...lol, the first ride i went on, the battery went flat at the servo, had to ring in some help with jumper leads, pretty embarasing when ya sittin at a petrol station with the seat off....

    ok , kick start.
took the crome cap off, it was held on by silastic, put the pedal on, and think i will keep it in the tool bag instead of on the bike, it sticks out to much for my liking, could possably be the wrong one but as a back up, it can stay in the bag.

OK Mate, You may want to change over to the new style kicker, it sits a lot closer to the bike. Here are a few pics of my old Shovel to show you.

    Hi Kymbo,

Definition of Electric start Shovelhead:  An electrical piece of equipment guaranteed not to work when you need it.  Adds a lot of weight  and useless wiring to a Harley. Wish I had the bucks to put a kicker on my Heritage.

    Hi Kymbo,

Not only callouses on your thumb mate, sometimes comments come back to byte you in the ass. i used to get a lot of shit from a mate in Sydney about my "boat anchor". He rode a kawathingy XPZRFT 1100zzszit. One day coming back from a bike show at Seven Hills pub I had enough. We pulled up to a set of lights and I said  "put your money where your mouth is!!!" We knew the cops were all at the show or around it ( Bandidos bike show 3 years after Milperra, cops were still a bit toey.) Lights turned green and we were off, by the time he'd gotten to 3d I was in 4th and off by 4 bike lengths. He clocked me at 167 before the road came to a T and I had to slow down, but I was still in front by 1 bike length.  Mind you, his top speed and 6 gears would have eventually shat on me, but off the line I had him. We got back to his place and I chucked him the keys, he came back 1/2 an hour later with a grin from ear to ear. Bought himself a Harley as soon as he could afford to. A softail custom, lecky start only, Boy I gave him shit about kickstart of the thumb. Bastard's having fun now I have an 89n with no kickstat.

Here's a pic of both bikes together.

Sea eagle, I got a kicker on my sled also. I kick her over in the morning and flick the go button after work. I do that regularly and she always starts on the third kick, like you could place a bet on it. I also run a S and S super E series carby and has been on the bike for at least 12 years and never failed me. That kicker is definetly wider than mine.

    Seaeagle,

if you have a look at the pics of Ink's bike on his intro forum, you'll see his also has the later style kicker, I reckon they not only sit closer but look better than the other.

Not a matter of not liking electric starts Seaeagle, more a matter of ZEN, of being one with one's machine,
the rite of passage of knowing YOU made it start . And after all that it could have something to do with Hitachi
and Prestolite bits of shit not doing the job when you needed them most!!!! And that's when a well tuned 1 kick
    start Harley comes in handy.
Have a few stories about having to make quick getaways, unfortunately they have to be told face to face.

By the way Hutch82, the Air cleaner was a Harley Item from the early 8o's, it was called
a Baby Moon Drilled cover. It came in chrome, I got mine de-chromed and black powder painted.

Time to add my 10c worth...

Having only owned a Shovel for 2 months, and having flatted the fully charged batter a number of times trying to get the beast to run!!!

    I love the magic button!!!

However once I figured out why it would not start, it nice to say Hay come see my bike and give it a kick over and it starts.

God made the bike with a kick starter and electric button, that's the way it should stay :)

Remember I have only 2 months experience, so my words count for zip..
