    Hi

What  synthetic oil I should use in my s/tail 2007?

And where in Perth is the best (cheapest) place to buy it? I am going to do an oil and filter change at 5000ks so thought I would go full synthetic?

I was told by the dealer that I can use the syn. in g/box too?

Never done a Harley oil change before, is there anything I need to know thats different from any oil change?

I do my own servicing on my other vehicles so am not a total beginner.

Or should I just take it somewhere and let them do it?

    Hi Mate,

I'm in Perth as well, try Dean for Amsoil on 94598603, this stuff you can use in all three holes, or Daryl on 0418756584 for Mobil 1. As far as doing it yourself go to www.dudeworld.com.au and there is a step by step info on motor oil change out and gearbox.

I also service all my vehicles including my Harley.
It's the same as any other vehicle. Just remeber to put a rubber gasket around the sumpnuts & torque it to the correct torque.

The best price for synthetic oil that works is about $73 for 5Ls of Penrite SIN 25, available at any Repco. This stuff is recommended by Penrite for Harleys. I change every 10,000 or 11,000 on my bike and every 16,000 on my car its drainage life is long.It will shit on most oils in extreme heat.

For the tranny Valvoline GL-5 gear oil works just great (change once a year no drama) available at Supercheapauto.

For the primary any type II auto transmission fluid or type F. (change once a year). As for synthetic oil in the primary there is no need, all what's needed is a cooling effect of a 5w 20.
This is what has worked for me & it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Are the drain "O" rings, filter etc. only available from the stealers? Or is there anywhere in the Perth Northern suburbs that stock them?
As It is a fair hike for me to Fraser's.

It is possible to use teflon (PTFE) paste aswell on the sump threads you can get it from Auto one. use reasonably sparingly. It's all practice.

I have just done Mobil 1 V twin in the crankcase, Castrol Syntrax in the transmission and castrol Transmax Z in the Primary. If you believe the hype, I should never need another oil change....LOL. Did feel a bit cooler in traffic the other day going up the "freeway" at about 5 km/h, but no real noticable difference in gearshifts or noise.

Thanks again guys for the info, looks like a trip to the stealers for the filter, so may as well pick up the original "O" rings too.

American Motorcycles Albany Hwy Vicpark sell Amsoil and a host of other Synthetics, filters etc and Orings, They are at the Causeway end of Albany Hwy. $120.00 for oil and filter.

Ive been using Amsoil for a couple of years now and it's pretty good stuff, engine runs a lot quieter and cooler...With hard riding I tend to change more often or at least not too long into the next scheduled change.

Yours being an 07 should have came factory with syn. I can tell you my experiance. I have 2000 FSXT carb which came with dino oil from factory. When I switched to syn the RPM,s jumped about 300 I also changed air filter which wasnt bad and put in HD splitfire plugs. The way I see it it had to be the oil. Used mobil 1 v twin in crank and mobil 1 syn products in other 2. I called the number on bottle and asked what they recomended I do know that the primary must have oil designed to run in wet clutch. Used different fluids in all 3 spots. No problems now 8 years!!!!! jambo Eastern Kentucky USA

Well thanks to Greg   "Gmeikle"  I'm now fully synthetic and know exactly what to do next time.

Finished up with Mobil 1 in engine and Redline in other two. The biggest difference I have noticed is in the transmission, it is silky smooth now,  compared to how it was.

Needed to replace all   3    "O" rings, and again ,many thanks to Greg for supplying the replacements, oils and filter! and the know how.

I even got a follow up phone call to check all was running ok!

    Cheers mate you're a gentleman.

    Good Move Banjo,

I've run Mobil 1 for 11 years now in EVO engine. Motors still pulling hard after 73K.

Also do an ocassional engine clean with German "Liqui Moly Engine Detox"

Valvoline ATF Type F in Primary changed very frequently is a good cost effective option.

ACF 50, it's now March 22. How many K's have you done, on what bike, and what issues have you had? I am interested in your feedback, as all the Harley knockers tell me that I'd be lucky to get 50,000k's without an engine rebuild!!! I have done 9,000 k's in nearly 6 months and have only broken a pinch bolt on my forks (no big deal).

    Oils ain't oils Sol.

I am keen to know as I have the oil change to do in a few months. I have narrowed it down to a choice of 5 in each hole now.

Gone back to using a good mineral oil in the 08 RK. Didn't like the idea of using oil with no detergent in it to wash the motor out.

Used Pennzoil in the evo for 17 yrs, pulled down the top end at 80k Km to replace the barrel gaskets. Could still see the hone marks on the bore and both barrels still had good compression, so that convinced me.

Different strokes for different blokes I guess.

David use Redline High Temp ATF in your primary and Mobil 70-90 syn in your gear box and it will love you .This is my choice and i find it works well in my Ultra no more clunks and the changes are smooth.V-twin in the engine.Charlie.
