Yeah mate, do a search in the forum on "internal wiring" and you'll find some info...has been discussed several times before.
Best way is to undo the tank and move it back a few inches, so you can get at the wiring connectors under there. Easiest to just disconnect them, pull the individual wires out and run the bundled wires from the switches back thru the bars down through the holes behind the frame neck tube, instead of cutting anything. Before you pull the wires from the connectors, take a pic or draw them so you know which colour goes where!

Other things to think about are the brake line (if you are putting wider / taller bars on) and you will need holes for the wiring to exit the bars and the indicator wires on each side. I found for my Dyna the hole between the risers needed to be about 2.5cm x 8mm to get them all pulled thru. Drilled three 8mm holes & joined em up with a file. The edges need to be really clean of course, any sharp edges can cut thru your wires.
When you are ready to pull the wiring through the bars, use a vacuum cleaner to suck some flshing line thru the holes first - then you can attach the wiring to the line with electrical tape and pull it through. If you choose to leave the black factory vinyl covering on the wiring, it will be easier to lube it first before pulling through the bars.

U r right about giving it a go yourself - I have found many of these jobs become self evident as you go!

    good luck
