Got myself a service manual for my softy, I was surprised at the amount of info it contains gonna take a bit of digesting.

As the point nears where my warranty runs out (end 08) I will attempt to do all servicing myself, will be interesting and may save a few dollars as well.

How many out there do thier own servicing and are there any pitfalls?

Manual cost $118.00, bit pricy but should pay for itself in first self service.

I do most of my servicing. Accept engine work.
The pitfalls are damaging threads (a torque wrench avoids this). Doing stuff what's too complicated for your level.
    Finding the right tools. AF

You gain experience from your mistakes on your m.bikes. (Start small).

These things are solid not made of porcelian. There's a medium margin for error.  Get a mechanic to check what you've done.  This always work.

Yep,have done a few extra oil changes on the bike since new and once the warranty is up I will also do all the servicing myself. I have had a lot of minor problems with the quality of dealer servicing,eg: destroying my sump plug with a rattle gun?? I think I will take a little more care of my own bike than the dealers do.

    Bobtail,

Checkout Fixmyhog.com thay have an interesting set of maintenance DVD's that cover the basic How to's with regard to carrying out work on your bike. I bought the touring set, and although I have worked on bikes for years they are still worth getting. The DVD's are simple to watch, they show every detail in an easy to understand format, they are divided into chapters ,dealing with each part of the service. When you register on the website with the serial number of the DVD, they send you a PDF file of the narative for the DVD, handy for looking up torque settings whilst working on the bike.

The beauty of the DVD is watching someone doing the work and explaining the little details you can watch it over agin if you do not get it first time. Unlike the Service manual once you get confused it is hard to get the correct train of thought ( or is that just me ).

Don't get me wrong the DVD is not a replacement for the Service Manual but a worth while accompaniment IMO.

Check out their website, the only thing you have got to lose is a bit of your time.

    Regards

    Steve.
