Front Brake Stop Light Switch

    Hi.

My front brake stop light switch is playing up. The lamp won't go off properly. When I let go of the lever, the lamp takes a few seconds to turn off, and sometimes "fades" off slowly. I discovered it when the cruise control wouldn't activate (the stop lamp was on all the time).

The problem is that the lever only needs to be compressed a bee's dick to tun the light on, and so it has to be hard against the stop to turn it off. I tried cleaning and lubricating the lever, and that worked for a couple of weeks, but the problem's back.

    Any thoughts?

Checked and re-seated the housing - still a problem.

Pulled off the lever and drilled a hole in the tang that hits the switch. Loctited an electrical screw in there so that the head would hit the switch, and ground down the head so it was about 1mm thick. Reassembled and works fine.

I am having the same problem, but mine is being caused by the rubber boot on the switch being torn, going to replace it soon.

it seems it may need something to stop the lever going all the way out and flicking past the switch

If you listen when you relase the lever all the way ,you will hear a click as it goes past the switch

this is going to be a problem when the levers get some wear in them

    Hi Black29d,

In the workshop manual, it says that you need to put a 4mm packer between the lever and the housing when you remove the lever, otherwise you risk damaging the switch/boot assembly. The packer holds the lever in a bit, and so it's off the switch. I found out about that only AFTER I'd already pulled the lever off a couple of times. Maybe I've damaged the boot and that was causing my problem too. I'll check it out.

The clicking you hear may be the brake light relay. Does it make the click with the ignition off?

The lever has a replaceable plastic bush, so you should only have to replace that when it wears.

Well done Gonzo, sometimes an ingenious idea beats or at least matches the 'right' one.

There's lots of warnings (I got mine repeatedly through word of mouth/peers' typings - about pushing a shim between the brake lever and housing to protect the switch. I only just remembered tonight before operating.

Cheers for giving details of a symptom and a fix to try if no adjustment works :)

    I look into that

I guess I have to get my finger out and buy a manual

The click is the lever, it does it with the ignition off, I have aftermarket chromed levers, they may be a little looser than stock

I looked into mine today, I think I know why the boot is torn and my lever is flicking past the switch

The after market chromed levers tang is not wide enoguh to engage the switch properly.

I have put the stock one back on and problem solved

I'm having the same brake light problem at mo with aftermarket levers - brake light stays on all the time. It was working fine for several months but I guess the new lever may have worn the hole in the boot ...why don't they tell ya there might be a problem before you buy these shiny bits??!!

I get the same clicking sound described by black29d. Apparently, you can't just buy a new rubber boot for the stop switch, my local stealer tells me I need a whole new switch - cost is $40.
