The events of this weekend with the failure of me battery (after 2 years) leads me to this question: what effect is there on a battery surrounded by a hot oil tank?? My simple answere would be that it can't be too good!!!...........what do you Softy riders recon?
Bt
My Shovel had the stock set-up of battery to the right, oil tank to the left. So you'd think it would be cool enough. Well, blew one up, it got that hot. Made a mess of the paint on both frame (including swingarm) and rear guard. But I found out it was a crook regulator overcharging it. So, do check your wiring and test your alternator/regulator. I did think of putting a horseshoe tank in place of the stock one for a while and thought out a few things I'd like to do (love tinkering!) . One that I thought about was to insulate the battery from the oil tank by lining the inside of the oil tank with some very thin roof insulation . I've seen it used with colorbond roofs, its got silver foil sandwiching thin insulation material. Couldn't hurt !!!
I'm getting SWHD (Tony) to look at it as soon as......Over the phone he tells me that there is little that can go wrong and that the battery can handle the heat.........Sounds like a bit of bad luck on my part.
Over the last few days I have monitored the new bat and there don't appear to be any issues, holding it's charge no probs at 12.9 V.........
And Noit!!!!....... what are ya doing in the softy section mate?... not enough action with the Dyna lot
