Chrome switch cap advice...

    I searched here and they were only touched on as part of installation of bars etc.

    I have some genuine chrome switch caps on order (for an XL1200C).  However, reading the US hd forums, most of them think this is the no.1 motherf**ker job to do DIY being:

    1.  Difficult to get the black caps off and the chrome ones on (and the chrome ones apparently break easily)
    2,  Fiddling with the throttle cables and those f**cking evil brass ferrel things on the ends of them
    3.  Fiddly setup with wires/spring and small screws
    4.  Having to fight your anger and frustration and needing most of an evening to knock this out...

    They also report that our 'expert' stealer friends stitch you up with two hours of labour time for this...

    I just see pain and maybe they're best of staying black (though the images seen and my mind knows how good chrome in the black would be).

    Anyone done these (and not turned into the Incredible Hulk in the middle of it)?

    What else can you guys add about this???

    I bought the chrome switches (Not the housing) for my 08' Dyna about 2 months ago but after reading the instructions it sounded bloody fiddly.
    I still have'nt worked up the energy to whack em' on and it's shitting me coz' I've now fitted 95% of all the other parts I got from the states.

    put chrome caps on a while ago LHS piece of piss RHS what a prick of a job..............you gotta have a bit of patience and like scotty said a small flat screwdriver........I used a jewellers one and watch out for the handbrake light switch , read the instructions.

    Just when I thought Commodores had some tricky-dicky stuff about them.

    If the instructions seem too hard I'll let my sit. They haven't arrived yet.

    Someone who is an expert/experienced up should start mentoring doing these. Could probably charge for it hehehe!

    OK i'm going to cut the edges/flaps off the new chrome ones and then just superglue the face of the black switch.

    I agree, those chrome caps are a shit of a job...maybe I don't masturbate enough Scotty... 

    I had trouble getting the black ones off, ended up ripping the bastards out with pliers, and spent half a day putting most of the others on, had to chip tiny shards of plastic off the little star shaped cogs that the upper ones sit on just to be able to put the new ones on. In the end I had two left to go, and knew I was at the point of snapping something. So waited till the bike was in the shop & they put them on for nothing!!

    next time I'd gladly pay the $140 for ones already connected!!

    I spent 2 hours putting a new number plate frame/bracket on!!
    Ah well it was american one and took a fair bit of drilling etc. Looks AWESOME though.

    Will give the switches a proper go one night this week.

    As Scotty said.

    Piece a piss to put on. The only thing that may go wrong is when your clamping the wires back in the housings...they can be scatched.
    Other than that 1 hour is all it takes.

    Remove switch cap assemblies from switch housings.
    Get a small screwdriver (flat of course) slide under one side of the tab that is over the switch pivot...twist gently while putting slight side pressure to the switch cap.
    Once you get one side free from the pivot pin do the same for the other end and pop..the switch will pop off.
    To assemble new caps. get the right one for the switch first and just push them on. They have a slight taper/lead to aid the assembly.

    Now heres the tricky part...put the switch cap assemblies into the housing being careful not to scratch them against the housing as the caps are plastic. Once they are in carfully tuck the wires back into there original location and screw clamp up.

    If you can read the above you will have no problems.
