    Hi,

I've got an 06 Bob.  I recently removed the SEII's and heatshield's.  I'm now just running the stock pipes(wrapped) without mufflers.  I've been told by a reputable shop here in melbourne that this would not harm the engine nor do I need to remap the ecu.  He did suggest that I slot in some baffles for a bit of back pressure.  I just want to get some more opinions on this.  The ecu had been remapped with the SE AC and SEII's installed.  All opinions/suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks for your response stix. From my short squirt today due to bad weather it ran pretty good. Acceleration was up and lots of crackling and popping. I'm curious as to why you say straight through pipes would hurt performance. Could you please elaborate on that. I also took a look at the inside of the SEII's and they looked pretty much straight through except for a baffle in the middle.
I'd also like to ask at this point, how are aftermarket pipes constructed? For example the V&H short shots? They dont have mufflers, so do they have the baffles built in? Apart from different bore sizes and snazzy looks, would they be any different to the stock pipes?

The way the dealer was talking was that the previous owner had done the remap. I recieved no such hardware. Is the black box like a piggyback which would still be on the bike? or is it the black box that is plugged into the ecm whenever you need to retune?

p.s. I appreciate all your help guys. This bike is my first HD. Had a metric before this which I never wanted to mod anyway so I'm on a huge learning curve at the moment.

ok well here's the update on the situation. I wasn't happy with the drag pipe performance so I put the SEII's back on. Now the bike is running really bad. No go and not noisy. I spoke to the dealer who loaded the particular map that I had been told was done and he said "because of the era of the bike"(being an 06) a different method was used as apposed to using a SERT which he said they only use on 07 and 08 bikes because of the different computer blah blah blah. I told him it was running poor and he said to just check over the exhaust bolts and tighten them up. And then if it doesn't fix it he'll look at it next service. Well guess what, it didn't fix it! and guess what I wont be going back there!. I dont want to ride the bike now incase I cook something.

All I did was take the mufflers off for a day and then put them back on. Surely this wouldn't completely put the ECM out????? I can understand it not running right with the mufflers off but running worse with them on now.

So anyway after my little sook, this is what I would like to ask: If I went out and purchased a PCIII, and loaded the relevant map, will this solve my issue?

Not sure if this will work mate but it seems to fix some modern vehicles with an ECU, disconnect the battery and leave overnight, this should reset the ECU, works on cars, never tried it on bikes but cant see why it wouldnt work.

    Good luck

ok well its taken me a few days but I'm pretty sure I've worked out the problem. From the scattered information i've been given about my bike I hav pieced together that the previous owner never used a sert or a pc3. He infact just used the HD download that the dealer installed. Its a shocking patch as I have read, as it still makes the bike run lean to comply with emissionb standards. I mean, why would you bother getting a stage 1 kit and sufforcate the bike with a HD download. What I also found out that with this particular "band aid" map and possibly others is that if you have a power failure, or the battery gets disconnected at any stage you lose the map and the machine reverts back to the original settings. Which got me thinking, at the same time I was muckin around with the mufflers I had relocated and rewired my front indicators. So I'm thinking thats what has happened. I ordered a PC3 and fingers crossed it arrives tomorrow. I'll run the nearest map and then when silly season is over I'll take it to a dyno to get tweaked.

I read on the US HD forums that you could do a HD download on the 06's which backed up what the dealer said he had done. The dealer said that a SERT was not used. I recieved the PCIII USB this evening so I'm just in the process of getting it setup up. If anyone knows of a map for my setup please let me know.
