    Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if they've fitted a 180 wide tyre to a standard Deuce rear wheel?  I've had my deuce rear wheel chrome plated, rather than buy a different wheel, and i want to put a 180 tyre on it.

Would just like some comments from someone who has done this, or know someone who has........or in fact whether it's a good idea or not, with regards to belt clearance, etc.

All advice will be greatly appreciated

    John

Hi, thanks for that info......and as far as you know, it will fit with no drama's of hitting the drive belt or the inside of the rear guard??

Have you got the 180 on or the 160?

Hi, just thought i'd let you know......just had the screaming eagle 180 wide tyre (Dunlop) fitted to my newly chromed Deuce wheel......looks awesome but there's a problem.........the drive belt hits side of the tyre!!  Now have the dilemma of what to do......put a 160 back on, or put some kind of spacer to bring the drive pulley away from the tyre.

Anyone got any suggestions ? If i put a spacer between the pulley and wheel.....i'll need to do the same to the transmission pulley won't i ??

If i go down that avenue....where do i get these spacers, anyone know ??

Hi ratsmow.....thanks for your input........the tyre was put on by Brisbane Motorcycle tyres, and although the wheel is not on the bike yet, ( bike is being re-built) i could see that the belt would touch the tyre.

I put the belt on the pulley and it really does touch the tyre. So, i put a large spirit level across the tyre and found that the inner lip of the pulley was approx 2mm below the spirit level !

As that lip is approx 2mm........the belt will definately rub on the tyre!  Therefore in my case, a spacer will definately be required!

The other problem is, if i put a spacer bigger than 5mm, i'll lose the availablity of the centre spigot on the wheel - that locates the pulley.......unless i find or have made, a spacer with spigot.......will have to look into that !

If you find any more info, i'd appreciate hearing from you...........and i'll certainly keep you all informed of the outcome !

As you said.......some sites say they don't have a problem.......others have needed or used a spacer........i guess this just wasn't my lucky day !

Hi again.......machining the belt sounds interesting, as i'm only looking to gain a few mm......and the belt is off the bike at the moment.

Can you give me the details of the guy who can do this?

Also, because of the way this Screaming eagle tyre is constructed.....the outside edge of the tyre almost comes to a "point".....i've heard that this edge can be trimmed back too.....you heard of that being done before ??

Lastly, do you know what the minimum recommended clearance should be, between the belt and the tyre ??

sounds about the same as mine......i looked up Vulcanworks,(www.vulcanworks.net) and they do a kit specifically for the Deuce & 180 tyre......it consists of a spacer of approx 5mm, and because this is almost as deep as the flange on the wheel, the kit provides an adaptor to centralise the pulley.

What i don't understand is, they show a big rubber seal fitted between the wheel and the pulley, which they say is OEM........is this a late model item, or an american only item, 'cause i don't have any rubber seal fitted to my wheel........does yours??

Looking at the thickness of the seal.......if i had that fitted, i wouldn't even need the spacer !!

Anyone else heard of this ??

Any idea if it'll fit a 2000 deuce as well??

Hi mate I just put a 200 back wheel on my 2002 Deuce, I bought a Ride Wright wheel 18 x 5.5 and fitted a Metzeler Marathon 200/60  what you have to do is on the brake side you take off the brake assembly and grind or cut off the 10mm lug where the axel goes through as the wheel has to move 10mm to the right then cut a new spacer between the brake bracket and the hub. on the other side you have to replace the pully and belt with one off a 07 softail as they run a 20mm wide one otherwise the original belt will rub on the tyre and swingarm add a spacer between the pully and hub to clear the tyre and cut a new spacer between the swing arm and hub, you do NOT have to change the swingarm.
The hardest part of doing this is changing the drive belt as you have to take the seat off, battery out, remove the outer primary case remove the compensator and clutch basket undo the starter motor then take the inner primary off, undo the swing arm bolt and knock it through enough to remove the spacer where the belt passes then change the belt and put it back together, if you are not mechanically minded it will cost around $800 for a Harley mechanic to just change the belt.
So it can be done and it dose look very good, if anyone is interested I have made a video of how to do it also making another one of changing the back guard and making my own struts also splitting the fuel tank and widening it buy 70mm and full respray
