This thread is turning into a "How to get your bike going after 4 years in the shed!"

Kymbo, can you suggest a link or location where to get this re seal kit from? I have been working on the tank, and still see rust in the tank.

    Regards,
    Troy

I used the "POR" version which is a 3 step process clean/convert/seal which I got from Harts auto paint supplies which are common here in Qld but don't know about the rest of Aus.

The POR website has a retailers listing.

Just to give all an update, I have the bike running!!!

For now I have installed 2 fuel filters, I cleaned out both tanks and may still need to do the rust kill later.

So I can now start the bike and it runs with the enricher off.

So today time for a ride!

Thanks again for all the advise.

    Regards,
    Troy

Well the bike starts okay, and will run with out the enricher on. However after about 5 mins ride it started to coff back in the carb and I did not feel like making the phone call to the misses again! So back to the books, could just need to be a bit warmer?

Cris - Thanks very much for the oil cover part you sent, can you check what kind of oil switch I need to put into this, I have a number of different ones but could not find the PSI in the book.

This forum is very helpful and an excellent place to get information and help.

    Thanks again.

Don't know what pressure it is but oil switch is HD part number 26552-72 so you could try the harley dealer or any independant Harley shops in your area.

There is likely a generic part but knowing which one is the question.

    Hi Troy,
Oil Switch part No aftermarket is Accel 181104. There is a source for Shovel parts you might try. Pacific HD Trading Co. They put out a catalogue which is free( they send it to you COD, works out to about 10 bucks.), and they specialise in Shovels. They are in West Gosford NSW and their Number is (02) 4322 1666. I'm sure they will have it.
By the way, the tool kit suggested is for CYA (covering your ass) in long runs. Where anything and everything can and will go wrong, and by the way, Murphy was an optimist. For running around town you'd need only a portion of that gear. Easyest way to work out what you need is by breaking down, Ha Ha. Sad but true. In regards to your running problem when warm, Does it blow back through the carby? (sneeze), and does it do it when idling or on the move?. If it does it at idle first check your fuel line is not kinked or too close to or touching the cylinders, then try changing the mixture on the low speed needle (idle mixture screw in a bendix or Keihin) to slightly richer. Also check your float bowl and last but not least check your timing.
    Regards,
    Cris aka The Don.

    Thanks Cris,

Yes I have seen that link very good information!

Re the oil switch, have one on order so should get that installed next week, thanks again for the information.

The bike seems to blow back through the carby (sneeze), I did not let it get to an idle as I did not want it to die. Just gunned it back home :)

I will have a bit more of a play this week end.

    Thanks again.

Have a new question on the same subject (for a change)

When I replace the oil cover, what is everyones thoughts on taking off the oil cooler?

I will not be doing long runs on this bike, it will only be for short 1 hour at the most trips.

    G'day Troy,

I ran my Shovel without an oil cooler all  its life. Never had a problem. If you are only going to use it to run around and have fun, and don't intend to do touring I'd take it off.   If it's not there it can't break!  In regards to your cough or sneeze through the carby. Sounds to me like a bit more juice on the low speed needle or idle mixture screw. ( Have never owned an S & S carby, so I'm not sure which it has.), and check the float bowl level anyway.    Another thing I just remembered, Wheel and swingarm bearings and races are the same as Holden HQ/HZ ones, ABC bearings used to charge me $4.50 ea in the 80's whereas the Factory OEM through the Dealers sold for about $19 ea. Same bloody Timken bearing!!   As far as comfort goes, the clutch lever can be improved by changing to the Dog lever style they brought out in 82.

Bugger, dinner's ready and the wife's a good cook.

    Regards,

    Cris

    Thanks Cris,

Yes I did see that item on eBay and then I went to the local HD dealer in the city and ordered one for $18 all up. I use eBay a lot, however this time the local shop had one.

    Thanks again.

    Thanks Grumpys Cycles,

I have looked at the adjusters and noted they look almost fully adjusted, so that could well be on the cards to replace, I will add this to the list :)

The bike is still running okay with the enricher on, so may be it needs to be run more then 5 mins with this to get it warm?

    Finally I have success!!!!

After removing the carby for the 10th time, I cleaned out the intermediate jet to .031, as although I cleared the jet it was still being restricted.

Now the bike starts and will idle over with out the enricher on!

    Time to go riding...

Thanks again every one for the Massive support!
