Rear brake grabbing on 08 Fat Boy

Hi guys, my first post, sorry its a question!

Picked up my new Fat Boy a couple of weeks ago, and I noticed that the rear disc gets really hot even when not using the rear brake. The front disk on the other hand remians cool/warm even after use. The local dealer has had two attempts at fixing it, including replacing one set of burnt/worn pads.

    Anyone had similar issues? Comments?

    Thanks

    Thanks Scotty

Its back in on Thrusday and I will pass on your comments.

They have replaced the brake fluid twice, including flushing the lines backwards which they claim released some grit which (they thought) was preventing ther fluid flowing back into the reservoir. I assume they know whta the fill level is supposed to be.

    Thanks Bucket

On the first inspection, they told me the rear wheel wouldn't turn when on the hoist but that the disc was OK and did not need replacing. The pads had heated up to the point that the metal backing had changed to a different colour.

They have one more chance to fix it before i get a bit stroppy.

    Scotty

Before and after the first attempt to fix it, there was practically no pedal movement (which made me look at the rear brakes in the first place)

After the second attempt there was more to begin with but it has gone back to very little.

I didn't know they had Brembos on 08's :should be fine rteally. As i said, one more try before i get stroppy

Grit in the system...i would be requesting a system change from master cylinder to caliper and also a new rear disk...after all its your safety at risk.
    As Beeza suggests, Photos.
Put a small mark on each part only you know where it is and check that the parts have been replaced. Don't forget Photos Photos.

    Experience makes one wise.

Thanks to everyone who made a suggestion or added some advice. I will be going for the whole HOG (pardon the pun), new disc, new master cylinder, etc etc when I go in based on what i have read here. To be fair the dealer has been quite accommodating, now if they can just fix it!

waspe, they will put a warranty claim in...all warranty work has a time tagged to it in a code format, and yes they will be paid by HD. Will cost you nothing...be firm.you want what you paid for.

I just contacted the dealer to ask that they replace the whole brake system due to the advice above, and as I should have expected, they "will find that difficult once the calipers have been worked on"

I am inclned to give them one more go, but if they are unsuccessful is tehre nay benefit in complaining directly to HD Australia?

On a separate issue they tell me its quite tricky ton istall detachable hardware, and takes their mechanics about 2hrs (so a cost of about $220) to do the directional relocation kit and teh detachable hardware. I am pretty mechanically competent, is there any chjallenge in doing this myself?

Well the dealer has now tried three times over a total of three and a half days, and....they have finally conceded that the rear brake is grabbing. I have only had the bike for three weeks, and it still is not fixed!

If I don't get it back this weekend I am going to get stroppy.

Just a quick note to say how it worked out. After much complaining they elected to take the parts of a new bike in stock rather than have me wait for the parts to come from the US.

Thats no way a dealer should trade and definantly take off a new bike to fix a warranty issue. New parts should be ordered in for th repairs.

I ordered a part. The dealer told me it would need to be ordered in from the States. That was fine with me I was in no hurry. 3 weeks later the part arrives. Now thats great service.
So I don't know where the 6 weeks comes from.

Sorry to have to re-raise this issue, but ater getting the bike back from a complete rear brake system replacement (I am told) the rear brake disc still gets hot even when I deliberately do not use the rear brake to test it. The front disc in this circumstance, after doing all the braking, is only slightly warm. HD tech guy told me this was normal, but other guys I have been riding with (although not on Harley's) have cool rear disks when they are not used. SO, I am wondering if there are other 08 Fatboys with hot (and I mean hot) rear disks after moderate or no braking. Mine heats up after about 1 km.

Responses will help me determine whether I have a normal Harley or an abnormal one. I can't see any reason that the rear pads should drag on the disc all the time to genrate this heat, but there may be a valid reason.

    Help!!

Hmmm never gave the pipes a thought. I have the V & H Big raduis so maybe thats the difference. My disc is getting plenty of air for a solid & when i said COOL I did mean cool for a brake disc & not stinking hot as I thought was being described
