16 Tips
1. Put copper grease on spark plug threads to stop them threadlocking.
2. Put copper grease on exhaust bolts that go into engine making them easier to remove if you do.
3. If buying a battery charger get a 6AMP and above as there faster at charging (make sure it's an automatic/trickle charger).
4. Use WD-40 for small amounts of rust on the bike. Scrub it with a toothbrush to work WD- 40 in.
5. Use funnels when adding oil to engne, transmission, primary etc. It reduces spills and is faster.
6. If you want smoother throttle control take off the throttle grip and lube handlbar with Petroleum Jelly of GPG. Put throttle back on. This works great.
7. Use a plastic measuring beaker for adding oil to transmission to Harley as it's more accurate and faster in the long term.
8. Use a torque wrench for bolts, fastners etc. It's better for the threads in the long run. I use the old dial style one with the metal needle.
9. AF socket converters are great investment when using torque wrench etc. if you have mixed tools like me.
10. Wax bike in the shade as the colour on the bike will fade rapidly otherwise due to heat.
11. I recommend wearing rubber gloves when doing engine oil changes. (Latex disposible gloves are good as you just throw 'em away).
12. You can use most car oil filter wrenches to get Harley oil filters off. The ones with straps work best. It's possible to even use a thin, cheap belt to get the filter off it's not put on with a wrench.
13. The shelf life for oil products is 3 yrs usually.
14.Buying oil in 10 & 20Ls etc. saves money for personal use. Bulk buying oil, for e.g 209Ls of oil with a group of mates or a MC club slashes your oil change costs dramatically. (See simply-online.com.au & seemore.com.au. The later has cheap Penrite SIN I think. The first one you can get everything).
15. K&P Engineering do a re-useable oil filter for Harleys that work very well. You only need buy one. I have one myself. It increases oil circulation.
16. If you want to check your engines condition, buy a engine compression gauge. Make sure you get an adapter that fits your bike (usually spark plug size).
