Lanotech is a pretty good product, you can get it in a tub or a aerosol can version. Made from sheeps wool. I have used it on a leather jacket and it's excellent. Heavy Duty magazine did a product review a few years ago, so I bought a tub. Also good for threads on bolts etc. Stops corrosion and rust.

    Hey kiwicasanovadave.

I swear by R.M. Williams Saddle Dressing. It's cheap, smells nice and I've been using it for years and I've never had any leather crack or dry out. It can be a bit greasy, but then again a bit of lube prevents friction!

"In New Zealand, BAH means NO!" Oh no, this could be the start of the bad New Zealand joke thread!

I'm with Todd, RM Williams leather gear is great, it's all I'll use on my boots and it brought up the bags on the Vstar nicely too.

Anything has to be better than nothing, I use Kiwi Mink Oil which I picked up in the states at Walmart, it looks like Dubin but soaks into the leather real easy.

I did a bit or research into this a couple of years ago. Up 'til then I'd always used Dubbin but leather gurus said not to use it due to it containing mineral oils.

They all seemed to recommend straight beeswax. One product I found that was recommended is "Snow Seal". You can get it at ski shops & outdoor shops etc. Whereas I would have to Dubbin my boots almost weekly with the amount of wet weather I was riding in, I found I would only have to do my boots maybe once every 2 or 3 months during almost daily wet weather riding.

I found it provided better wet weather protection as well. I also use it on my leather jacket- about 3 times a year.

It leaves a waxy feel as opposed to the greasy feel of Dubbin. It's more expensive but lasts longer. I paid about $13 for a 200 gram jar.

I do all my own leather work, have done for well over 20 yrs and by far the best is r.m williams saddle dressing.
Tried the lot and done heaps of reading on the topic over the yrs. Lots of leather care products around use ingredients that aint good for leather, like lanolin for example. The r.m williams stuff still uses the same recipe since the day it was first made.
Dubbin can be bad if you put too much on and is shit for stitching. r.m williams saddle dressing, if you put too much on just wipes off, you cant use to much and it wont fuck stitching, which is important. I know of people in the US that get the stuff sent over to them. I know of 1 bloke who still has his great great grandfathers saddle as good as new and is a pretty recognised saddle maker in the Cali desert and the only stuff he uses is r.m williams
If you want something to last, get on it. litre tub is fuck all and lasts forever

Thanks for the very handy info Chimney, I'll give the RM's a go next time.

Umm, dunno about the "litre tub is fuck all ..." comment; does anything at RM's cost f*ck all? All good stuff, but jeez it's exxy!

When I use Dubin or any of those similar products I end up with the blue cheese look!.

With all the rain up here all my leather turns into a mouldy mess. I now use corrosion block on my furniture and leather to keep it lookin nice and mould free,
