Newbie questions!

    Hi guys,

Firstly, thanks for such a great forum!

I have just managed to get my rider license (have been a car driver for ~10 years - and currently own a 2005 RX8). I have absolutely no clue about bikes in general, but I fell in love with them when I rode a 125cc dirt bike for the first time at a random persons farm several years ago. I don't really know anyone with bikes unfortunately, so please be kind if you find my questions utterly outrageous or even downright stupid!

With my budget, i.e ~9k (as a starting, weekend bike) - my choices are quite limited. I'm a big fan of chrome - so I'm hoping to get a cruiser type of bike, the 2 that come to mind from my (rather limited) research are the Honda Shadow and the HD's. The fact that I am posting in a HD forum is pretty much indicative of my love for harleys in general and my childhood fascination with these beatiful machines.

I've been looking into getting a Sportster or a Fatboy as these to be around my budget and look very, very nice.

Ok, so now to my questions -

The bike itself is perfect in every possible way - however, I like really large (read: FAT and WIDE) rear wheels on bikes.

    1) Whats the widest tyres than can generally be put on without modifying anything else on the bike?

    2) Are fat-rear-wheel conversions a good idea on the sportsters/fatboy's? From random searches, the conversion kits seem to be averaging around $1000+ mark - is it worth doing this on a sportster after I've paid $9K for it, or is there another bike around the same price range, with stock fat rears?

     +

Thanks, and sorry for these silly questions lol

    Thanks for the reply!

Are these FOR SALE ads generally scams??

Damn, I was getting all excited for nothing :( I knew it sounded too good to be true when I couldn't find a similar priced fatboy on bikesales/trading post.

    Old'ish sportsters are lovely :)

    Hey Jam3s,

Are you off your probationary period yet? I rode around of one of those Hyosung GV250's for quite a while after getting my license. Looks like a bigger bike, lots of chrome looking plastic parts so it's not overly heavy, handles well. But... most of the guys here will tell you (and are bias) that once you go over to Harley's, there's no turning back... :)
