If you want to save a few bucks for the moment, you can modify your original ones.

Takes drilling out the baffles and making the original 3mm holes out to 6mm.

Putting an extra row on the carby side and adding a few rows on the tyre side.

Then you weld the baffle back in, has deep sound and boosts performance at minumal cost.

v&h short shots with the quiet baffles for a little back pressure work well.
had a set of se2 mufflers . lasted 9mths chrome started to pit all over them
from memory the short shots were 530.00 from the local harley dealer

    The modification isn't to drastic.

Deeper sound and not as loud as plugging the baffle.

Up to you to what you want to spend.

Just giving suggestions if you are on a budget?

phillthy can you clear up the part about welding the baffles back in. Do the baffles have to be cut out in the first place. Exactly what do you have to do to complete the job.

You have to drill out the baffles with a hole saw. Then drill the holes out in the baffles. Then weld the baffles back in.

I bent up a bit of 4mm rod in a cirlce and welded it to the baffle and then filed the muffler to fit and welded it in place.

Only took a couple of hours to do and I was ginning around doing it.

Just buy a second hand set of slip ons, that way if ya do get done for being a noisy bastard you can slip em off and put the std ones back on until the bike passes then put the noisy ones back on.
    Just my.02 worth.

Wont be modifying the stockers, but realy like the thunderheaders 2 into 1, are they available in Australia?
Second choice will the best of the non genuine slip ons.
    Thanks for the help.

Yeah you can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

So say, sticking on V&H's has the Old Bill (errr, the johnny whoppers/cops) interested defect-wise?

I find the stock sound on a 1200+ harley to be plenty louder than most engines out on the road, but of course, a pimped softail model will thunder over the top of mine at the moment.  To boot, there's a lot of 'fully-sick' muzztec engines out there and seeming let be...

I was thinking of V & H's when I do the 1,000 mile servicing, but really wanna avoid needless attention and dealing with Mr Plod.

The V & H short shots attract attention... I had a copper pull up next to me yesterday and didn't seem to pay me any attention at all (Mind you I barely rolled the throttle to take off just to make sure lol). Most non-riding type will either be "That sounds awesome" or "Damn bikies with their crime etc...). End of the day, they can hear you and know you're there and for me... I'm happy to have loud pipes and ride (But I am holding onto the original pipes if I have to pay the EPA a visit).

My 2 cents... if you're too worried about the noise, I'd look at another pipe, or maybe slip ons? But I smile everytime I fire up me Nighty and roll out... Every single time :)

Wow, I was down at the d'ship on Saturday and got a good deal on some Vance and Hines straights. Went and got the car to get them home for DIY.

But after laboring, the first fire up was so cool. Talk about hum. I wish they were down a little more on volume but retain the same note. For the record too, I am respectful in short-as-possible gear changes and not giving the bike any real goose in residential streets, especially at night.

It was a bastard getting the standards off, talk about tight. Any good tips for ensuring the slip-ons actually slip? It was a little fiddly also piecing up the V&H's for the first time.

*edit* NB:  I also was a little bewildered that the d'ship guys had never even heard of Cycle Shack brand exhausts!  Must be chiefly North American?
