    Anyone have / use a 3d printer?

Im rebuilding my blue FXR and finally bit the bullet and bought one with the intention of trying to design a few parts here and there and prototype them.

Only early days but its very helpful to be able to knock up tools when needed, helps build the CAD skills too.

Tussuck has one John, he was making bits and bobs for his bike, was a thread about it awhile back, handy bit of kit in the right hands.

Also the hobby CNC market is big now .
You can even get a 5 axis !
Forget plastic and go straight to metal 😉

The plan was once happy with design iterations etc to just outsource and get it done by proper machines which I think is a bit more accessible now.

I love my Bambu Labs X1 Carbon....  draw up things in Tinkercad and print away.  Done a few for my painting like gun holders etc.  Not many parts for the bike, but will let rip when i buy anotherr Sporty to chopper.

I know nothing about these 3 D printers but I am curious.
Can you manufacturer metal components with them?

If you wanted to drop tens of thousands you could.

Otherwise you'd just design it till your happy with it in plastic then send it off to be CNC'd or Metal printed in a variety of metals. Seems to be the more economical approach for a hobbyist.

Cam plate is coming off tomorrow, so took the opportunity to try and make a little lifter holder.

First version came out nice, interference fit for the Neodydium magnets I had lying around.

It was not adjustable though, so have done up a new version an inbuilt screw (acme thread), built in a way that can be printed in place.... Havent actually done this before so expecting to play with tolerances, but will be a learning experience none the less.

Great idea with the thread, they need good magnets and it sounds like you have that covered, I brought a commercial set of magnetic lifter retainers and found they were not up to the task, the slightest bump and the lifter would fall off, was a bit disappointed but the clips serve me well lol.

Well the thread in place version was a fail.

Did a new version with two separate components and and it worked.

Havent figured out what the trick is to getting the right polarity when pressing magnets in though 😅.

Ive been using the 10x5mm neo magnets which are very strong. Went to buy more and didnt realise how exxy they were compared to the small ones!

In good news, checked the runout on my 110 this morning and its good enough for me!
