i have a oil migration problem om my 2005 fxdx dyna .the oil is migrating from primary to gearbox all seals replaced inner and outer primary and problem still exists. All info i have says the other way around gearbox to primary. Has anyone had or herd of this problem i think I'm going mad as i cannot find anyone else with same issue

Haven't worked on a pre 06 Dyna since 05 so not really up with it, my thinking though is your primary may be pressuring, it shouldn't though as it vents through the clutch pushrod cavity, any aftermarket rods or mods in play there?
Edit, so following that train of thought could the gearbox vent tube be blocked? Just stabbing at it as I dunno, not heard of it either.

no all stock did compensator and cam chain tensioners at same time only mod is rocker lockers ,i think its pressurizing
from crank seal

I edited my first reply, if it's crank seal there would be engine oil filling the primary though wouldn't there?

its always used a bit of engine oil, I think ill get some engine dye and start with engine just to check that main crank seal just in case there is a cracked case that opens when hot,my thinking is and im no guru gearbox breather working correctly , pressure from crank seal build up in primary splash system forcing oil though bad quad seal or hollow shaft, so corse of action. engine dye in each compartment one at a time

Dumb questions - you are satisfied that the oil is migrating to the gearbox? Have you drained the box and measured the fill amount, then drained it after migration and measured the amount in there?

long story, serviced in Adelaide by dealership while repairs after accident did about 6 or 7000 km on way home from Brisbane it got noisy, when
home checked primary stuffed compensator and dribble of oil inside no external leak only a weep not dripping just a oil stain i don't believe its enough to leak out that amount of oil ,i blamed dealership for not putting enough oil in , replaced all bearings and seals inner and outer primary, also did cam chest tensioners and all bearings and seals, I did not check gearbox level just replaced oil,3000 km later about to do a full 3 hole service ready for a ride to Brisbane, checked primary oil as disappeared before cannot see level , check gearbox level this time, it's over full called myself a Wally for over filling it, drained excess in to clean container measured 200ml poured said oil into primary remembering this is a test oil will be drained anyway, that 200ml took primary to correct level this time no external leaks or weeps my conclusion right or wrong oil migrated, Harley dealership did fill it and i have a possibly l problem going on for some time.

any thoughts anyone maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree , as no one has seen before on tc88, i get it that workshops dont want to give info when doing work yourself, there has to be someone out there that's seen this, the ramble is just my frustrated old brain

Can't fault your logic there, the how and why of it though!
What we know.
Gearbox breather is clear ✓
Primary oil is migrating to trans ✓
Stock clutch pushrod ✓
What about the lower crankcase breather, it goes into the gearbox I think, maybe it is blocked somehow and crankcase pressure is being forced past the main seal into the primary at a rate that can't be alleviated by the venting through the clutch pushrod cavity?
Even if the breather isn't blocked perhaps you have some ring blowby and the crankcase is not venting fast enough so pressure is forced past the crank seal?
One last thought, are your head breathers clear?
Sorry, brain jumps all over the joint.

top breathers are new i think they can only go one way, when i get home im going to replace all oil ad put engine dye in engine and see if any going where it shouldn't after about 500 km ill check if no migration ill flush and do same with primary each time measuring oil in compartment next gearbox I'm thinking if i pull it apart i might not be able to see what the problem is ,that's the method in my madness ,by the way i appreciate the input ,from my recollection there ar 2 breathers 1 in each cylinder at top of engine only other breather hollow shaft primary to geabox and one on top gearbox

Maybe I'm getting mixed up with Evo cases, either way if it is crankcase pressure getting into the primary then there must be a reason for it, if your breathers are working there shouldn't be enough pressure in the crankcase to bypass the crank seal, unless it's shagged I suppose, keen to read what you find with the dye.

I'll keep you posted, I'll be home end of month, I'm suspecting crank seal even though its new I'm hoping no cracked casing

Thinking out loud:
Quad seal on the gearbox mainshaft shouldn't be involved - it is behind the drive pulley and not connected directly to the primary case. And I'd expect the gearbox to be low/empty if this were leaking.
If the crank seal is letting pressure through into the primary, I'd expect motor oil to be coming through too. And the primary would be overfilled. This I have experienced.
Possibly the primary is filling enough to let oil into the hollow mainshaft and then into the transmission -
I'm not certain that this can occur though
. But even so, this doesn't explain why the primary is empty - under these conditions it would be filled up to the mainshaft.
I'd be adding dye - as you earlier mentioned - to one oil at a time and seeing where it winds up. Or draining all three compartments, adding a measured fill to each, then later draining and measuring what comes out of each compartment.

ill try the dye one compartment at a time, someone on another site said check main shaft seal and push rod if oil correctly check main shaft run out, so once apart check main shaft on trans, i think ill still use the dye

The more I think about it the more flummoxed I get. Hope you work it out.
