Is that SE ignition module plug & play 😮
I don't know much about Sporties, but i don't recall them using that style module - a bit of re-wiring needed maybe !
    Maybe educate us .

Fair enough, so for the first two years of the sporty sport they had the same 1200 engine and ignition as the others of those years, that is 96 and 97, in 98 they changed to twin plug heads, single fire, 4 post coil, a twin plugged ignition module under the seat that takes input from a MAP sensor instead of Voes, a different pick up cup with 6 slots I think, rev limiter set at 5800 ish and W cam's, compression ratio was raised to 10-1 as well. There's more but that's the big bits I think.
Naturally there is a bit left on the table even with those changes, enter the SE catalogue, they released two SE ignition modules, one had the rev limiter at 6800 the other 7500, there is some timing differences between the two, I'm not full bottle on that as yet but both offer more giddy up than stock, obviously you wouldn't want to be hitting those limiters with a stock set up valve train wise.
The modules came out in kits with a coil, 3 for each module, best I can ascertain was the difference between each of the kits of three was the colour of the coil.
I believe the kit I brought was sold under the part number 32737-98, the seller has thrown in the SE leads, a spare MAP sensor and a pick up cup, I don't need them but hey, spares.
I have some literature in the shed somewhere with more on it as when I had my 96 sporty sport I looked into bringing it up to the 98 model specs, never did get around to it but I think the research stuff is kicking about, there was a lot involved, more than I was prepared to take on at the time.
So that's about where I'm at for now, waiting on the bike to arrive and some minor but desirable (to me) extra's.

Did you have one of the SE modules on yours? My 96 sporty sport would go over 6k but it was a totally different stock module to what the 98's to 03 had.

The later ones were absolute hellfire crackers i had an 02 - and yes did rev to over 6 k , went like a demon .

Fast Loud and all kinds of fun .

I was looking through Ronnies parts fiche yesterday and discovered that the XL1200S stock ignition module changed part numbers from the original 1998 one to a new one in 2001, perhaps the rev limiter was raised slightly with that change as well,
I haven't been able to find any information about what exactly changed, the wiring all stayed the same from 1998 until the last one in 2003, best as I can make out main harnesses wise anyway so it must be mapping changes of some description.
I didn't sell my first one, I crashed it and the bike was written off, looking back I regret letting that happen now as I could of fixed it, at the time it seemed to make sense to let it go.

Apologies my laptop is very basic - so the pics are a bit rubbish
    The ignition modules were
     street
    32633-96 limited to 6800rpm inc 1200s
    But  race
    could go to 8000rpm - not 1200s

Sorry to hear that mate, hope you fully recover quickly, really sucks when the man pulls the wheels from under you, I had a hearty in 2013, was a pain in the butt for a bit but licence returned and I've passed every medical since, as for the bike, if it's ment to be it will happen 😁

Hope that the outcome when they do identify the cause is favourable Rex.
I probably should put up Warren Zevons words when he learned he had terminal lung cancer:
"Well first of all let me say that I might have made a tactical error in not going to a physician in 20 years."
I did that too, just a couple of visits to get stitched up. But then I went and asked about a mark on my back, had a stage 2 malignant melanoma removed and they've been digging more out regularly in the 28 years since. One of them probably would have got me, and I would have missed out on a lot of good miles and getting a couple of great bikes.
And quacks never want you to ride bikes, been told a couple of times: And of course you'll never ride a motorcycle again.
Only possible response so far for me is: You're dreamin!
