Tank liner breaking down

Hello all,

So after having 2 fuel pumps seize, I’ve discovered that the liner inside my 2010 fatty has started to break down. So it needs to be removed and redone.

Anyone done this themselves, or know a good mob that can do it.

if i remember rightly, years ago with my evo tanks, i used length of small chain with some petrol or sumin similar & shook them seemingly forever, drain & repeat 50 million times til clear...

Yeah - it's a pain the arse, and if it was not for an expensive custom paint job, I could find an easier out.

Sadly, I need to fix this one.

G'day mongrel, been awhile, pretty sure steamer ment hang your current tank on the wall in the man cave and get another tank, guess he missed the bit about it being a custom paint job so that isn't an option for you, or at least not one you want to take, I did see an article about doing what you are looking at attempting not long ago, had a list of specific products to use both in getting the shit out and creating a new liner, will see if I can find it again.

Yeah man - been ages! AHAH Nice to be back though.

The problem is this custom paint job is fairly full on, and would be impossible to match colours anyway, so it would be a complete redo.

Don't know if this is what you are looking for but I have had success with POR15 tank sealer (so far). The tank was rusty inside and had a lot of rust sediment. The tank sealer came with a couple of products to clean the inside, though I did use the chain trick and shook it a lot to knock the rust off. The tank also has been around the block; you can see from the dodgy pics of the inside where it has been cut open and rewelded - it is mounted on a 95 Sportster.

I used this stuff successfully years ago - though the bike is long gone, I ran it for a number of years without problem. Used ball bearings to knock off the old liner - as noted previously, this was a drawn out task.

I note that Ethanol fuel is mentioned - something I have never put in the Fat! Anyways... Thanks for the info. I will keep reading and researching. I have 3 months to get this done before Rego expires (which would be a disaster) so need get moving pretty soon.

I need to make sure, whatever method is used, the outside paint is kept in tact. Any form of regular paint stripper will be bad if it gets on the outside.

I was able to buy a bung for the the fuel petcock outlet (from Shipways SA) and a bent over rubber hose sealed the overflow pipe so I was able to shake the crap out of the tank while the goop and the chain was in there to clean it.The reason I used a length of chain rather than ball bearings is so I was able to fish the chain out of the tank easily (I have also heard of guys using a bunch of nuts loosely connected on a piece if wire).

Disclaimer: I have not tried this with a tank that has a fuel pump in it - never even had a bike with a fuel pump in it (and at nearly 70 years old I don't want one).

And for the tight arses amongst us, a couple of handfuls of jagged gravel works well too, just make sure you rinse it well. The nuts on a wire idea sounds like a good one T4.
You'd need to pull out the fuel pump though I'd reckon.
I probably should do the Sporty tank.

I have managed to find a mob in Sydney that will do it.

Yes - The fuel pump is all removed etc, so just the tank. Mine is the EFI model, so has the quick release fuel hose.

I am going to run it up to them, and let the professionals take care of it. Have been advised should be less than a $300 fix.

I will keep you updated, and will let you know who it is if it is a good outcome.

One of the first things I noticed when I bought my bike was the neck on the inside of the tank was peeling away. You only noticed it when you were putting petrol in.(cos the cap was on and you didn't worry about it)
Approximately 17 years later I don't even bother looking at it now when I'm filling it up.
And just to confuse everyone, I have never changed the fuel filter.
Where is the fuckin fuel filter anyway?

It's in the tank, it's prick to do, 3 arms would make it easier.

Welcome back John the Mongrel!

I’m curious how some tanks deteriorate as opposed to others. Maybe something to do with not being ridden enough with fuel being used and changed over regularly?

yes possibly left parked up with not much fuel in the tank, it pay's to top up your tank before storing the bike for a while with a stabilizer to prevent the fuel going off
