I met a bloke one time who was riding a sporty. He had a dead pig hanging off the small luggage rack behind the sissy bar. The blood was still dripping off the fuckin thing.
I asked him what was the story with the pig and he said he had just shot it and was taking it home to eat it.
You meet the nicest people riding Sporty's.
That wasnt you was it Obi ?

Why don't youse just get rid of the old carburated skirtskers and buy a fuel injected  softail model ?

You won't have to be fuckin around with points and jets if you follow this sage advice.
As an added bonus,  your street cred should jump up a couple of notches  !

Well I suppose I could, got any spare change you could sling me to help with that?

But the old shitbox needs me to look after it, no one else would bother.
An increase in street cred? By riding the same bike any dentist could buy off the shop floor? People who are into old Sporties might disagree with that, reckon it's cooler to not care. Me, I just don't give a fuck. :-)

The "no one else would bother" ain't true Steve...that old girl deserves respect for the service and memories that its provided to you. Should be left as a family legacy to either a son/daughter or put on display somewhere. I am aware of some of its adventures as well as its misadventures....some involving being underwater for periods of time.

Thanks for the input. S & S going on tonight to see if it makes a difference. Noticed some 'key banging " yesterday putting on my mate's truck. We'll see ........

Let us know how the S&S goes.
Love your first pic of the melted ignition pick up, mine looked like that too.
Key banging? That's just us having fun. Old Beags likes to come on like a cranky old bugga sometimes, but he's really a nice bloke under the crusty act.
When his neighbours cat gets into his yard and digs up the garden to shit in it, he doesn't send it home airmail over the fence, but gives it a saucer of milk, a feed of cat biscuits he buys specially for it, and carries it next door cuddling it and scratching its ears going Who's a pretty kitty eh, just to make sure it gets home safely.
A really nice bloke, the forum wouldn't be the same without him.
And Beags, that must have been some other bloke with the pig, my dead pig episode involved a drunk mate who was staying with me for a few months bringing home a fresh road kill one on his Yam SR500 but was too pissed to get it down the steep dirt driveway, so I went up on the Honda 4 sidecar rig and bought it home slung between the bike and the chair, had it butchered out and in the freezer by sunrise.
And PB, might put some fresh tape on the Sporty seat and ride it over to my old indie shop's ride in December.

It all does sound a bit carby like, never used an S&S carby, they take much setting up? I had CV's on my sporty(stock size) and FXDX(44mm), they didn't play up so never needed to do much to them although I did put a different emulsion tube in the sporty, just because lol.

Dont know what Obi is waffling on about me and the next door neighbours cat . I havent scratched a cats ears since I was 10 years old.
But I digress.  What the fuck is an emulsion tube ?

    Thanks for the headfuck Hilly.
I dont know fuck all about carburators and if I live the rest of my life and learn nothing about carburators that will be good.

    Just for you Beages

yep... have a solid collection of all those here.  Gathered and collected CV carbs when I had the turbo on the FXR.

The thing with our electronic marvels Beages is when, not if, when you can no longer buy replacement ecms or other fancy modules they need to run you are up shit creek, with points the only thing that would concern me is getting quality replacement parts in the future, I'd be stockpiling all the bits and bobs taking into account my age and probable longevity or lack of it lol.

Shit, I misunderstood the key banging bit. Sounds like a great way to blow what's left of the baffles out of the muffler. I'd be too worried about the fragility of the 4 speed transmission with no compensator to do that on my Sporty, even though it's now all Andrews stuff.
Thanks for the Yost Power Tube memories Hilly, I'd forgotten about them. I stuck with a CV too, works well on mine,  even though the body is worn now after wearing out 3 slides. But I have helped set up a couple of Super Es, and even a twin Amal Monobloc set-up on a shovel for a really masochistic mate.
S&S are simple but subtle, and a really experienced tuner with a dyno and O2 sensors will always get the best results, but a reasonable basic running set-up is within most people's reach if they have patience.

And you could spend a year watching all the YouTube videos about them, but the S&S one in the link is the best place to start.
And I don't think the yanks are going to stop making parts for S&S carbs any time soon, solely for off road competition use only of course. Or stop making points for 6 cylinder Chevies for off road use only either.
And Beags, I was telling a new bloke on the forum what a nice person you are, and you're still not happy?

No I am not fuckin happy.
You accused me of being a cat lover.
I dont like the horrible fuckin things.
But lets get this thread back on track about how carburators are fiddly tempromental fuckin things.

Well yeah they can be, some more so than others. Keihin CVs are about as good as they get for holding a pretty accurate tune long term, at widely varying altitudes. The 40mm ones apparently support up to 75 hp, I don't really know about the 44mm ones.
And yes 75hp is pretty small bickies now.
The real finicky bits are ignition points, you set them up and they start failing slowly, set them back up, repeat.
But if it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
I'm straddling the fence of course, 2 of my bikes are fuel injected.

I would agree Obi, I have 3 carb bikes, they all had S&S E’s on them when I got them, there just was always a fkn issue. Now have CV’s on all of them, still tuning the shovel, it’s proving to be a bit harder than the Evo’s, but running elec ignition on all three, no more dramas, but points, nah fck that.

So........ update . I am fortunately surrounded by people smarter than me . Consensus is that problem is ignition related not carby . Carby had some loving prior , apparently . Have ordered the Daytona Twin Tec DTT - 1010 ignition kit, from EasyR  . My VOES switch is cactus , tested today . This unit does not require and uses the mechanical advance assembly. The S&S Super E unfortunately was never going to fit without mods to the manifold and Carby ....   Thoughts ?

Is your alternator on the crank or behind the clutch hub? Maybe your bike is an 86 frame with a 91 or later engine? Perhaps?
