Cobra 3" Slip on - Quiet Baffle

I've just bought and assembled a Cobra 3" slip on (Product Code 6031) to my 2014 Sportster less than a week ago and I'm worried it's too loud for where I live. Although, I like the sound it makes, I also don't want to wake up the neighbourhood. Anybody has experience with the 1-3/4" replacement cores/baffle for this slip on? Considering getting it but if it doesnt dampen the sound too much I may cut my losses and go back to using the stock pipes.

I have the same pipes on my 2014 Sporty and I got the quiet baffles.  Don't bother, the quiet baffles are also too loud.  These exhaust companies should be condemned for not offering options like a quiet baffle that's 50% quieter than their hell loud version.  But it's more like 5% to 10%.

Thanks for that. I was hoping to get at least a 25% noise reduction. My commute to work also passes through school zones and I feel like a dick every time I ride past.

Did the swap as I got tired of the stock exhaust sound but that may just be the better option for me at this point.

I had the same dilema.  Stock mufflers sound awful, but aftermarket are all too loud.  I ended drilling some holes in the end caps of my stock mufflers.  I started off with 13mm holes then slowly enlarged to get the volume I wanted.  I think I ended up with the 13mm hole, then I added two 10mm holes.  This gave a much better sound than stock.  Still a little on the quiet side, but I prefer that to getting hearing damage.  I also prefer the look of the stock mufflers compared to most after market ones.

Supertrapp slip ons or a full system might give you blokes what you want, more discs, closed endcap or bang the open end cap if you want it a bit louder on the weekend, you can even get aftermarket endcaps that are adjustable from open to close and everything in between but if you have it shut you need enough discs fitted so the exhaust is not restricted.

I use this on a supertrapp exhaust which works well. Allen key opens and closes the end cap. Closed it loses some noise but still breathes out the discs. I run more discs than the supertrapp supermeg muffler core can supposedly flow so whether I run the end cap closed or open should impact little on the tune. When open it’s slightly more mellow than when running the supertrapp competition open end cap

I like the sound best with the supertrapp competition open end cap. It’s loud but not as obnoxious as others. But I’ve compromised with the above adjustable end cap to keep peace with my neighbourhood around coming and going early and late when I can simply close the cap in two seconds

Oh man Supertrapp sounds perfect for what I'm looking for. Probably should have done more research before I bought the Cobra slip on.

Weren't the Cobra slip-ons called neighbour haters? which possibly means they are loud, I have a Supertrapp 2-1 on my LRS and I like the ability to adjust the back pressure and sound as fatbat says

There were 3 different options with the Cobra - 3" Slashcut, 3" RPT, and the Neighbour Hater. I suspect the first two options were the same with different styling and less loud than the Neighbour Hater.

I went with the 3" Slashcut - They sounded much less loud on YouTube and they were on clearance price on eBay. It sounds great on the bike - Just a bit too loud for my liking and I was hoping the quiet baffle would help with that.

Have you considered the screaming eagle slip ons? They are much maligned but actually sound good, louder than stock without being too loud. Everyone overlooks them because they are 'too quiet' but I have found them to be a great compromise.

I have these!  Folks can hear you coming easy enough and they are social to your neighbours.  I rate these very well!  they certainly flow more than stock so work well with an ECU swap/upgrade.

Interesting. I have a set of Screaming Eagle II slash cut slip-ons on an 88 twin cam. These were stupidly loud and caused me much grief with the EPA. I stuck a set of quiet baffles in them and - at least to my ear - they are much better. Don't flow as well, but well enough. And have had no further EPA dramas.

Ahh yes, the Screaming Eagle II's are a different story. They were known for being loud, as you say. My post refers to the later Screaming Eagle slip-ons for a 2010 model Sportster. These later units have a baffle in them which is different to the stock slip ons. Hard to describe but the stock slip ons have a blank end cap which forces all exhaust to pass through the glass packing and then the holes in the baffle to make it out the end. The Screaming Eagles have a tapered baffle which lets some gas straight out and diverts the rest through the glass packing and then out the end of the pipe. So, not a true free flowing slip on but as a result they are not too loud.
