pretty pricey I looked into replacing the engine, primary and trans bolts and it was several hundred $ (HD ones though), I decided to spent that $ on performance mods instead

My only advice is don't fall into the trap of black oxide coated bolts... guaranteed to rust and look shit.

Im not sure how you ever get decent black bolts without getting tool marks etc.

I just use flat black enamel, I take the bolts out then clean with some thinners and then once dry give them a couple of coats of paint then refit and touch-up the tool marks with a fine/tiny paint brush

For what’s it’s worth, I blackened my OEM bolts using gun bluing liquid. Worked very well, just make sure you clean them really well first (brake cleaner) and then smother with WD40 for a couple of days before installation. Did them over a year ago and they still nice and black.  To be clear, the end colour is denim black, not gloss.
