Wheel spacers rear wheel on Fatboy

Workshop manual and you tube clips all say rear wheel spacers are to be marked left/right which is understandable, but also marked with an arrow showing outward. Without measuring the spacers, the axle hole and circumference show/look exactly the same both ends. Is it that important on direction. I have marked the larger (belt side), but could not mark the smaller (ABS/disc) one as it was hidden with the wheel in place and fell out while removing the wheel. This is on a 2013 Fatboy. Thanks fella's for your help.
Time for a new tyre as the old one was near the wear marks and was letting loose a little. Tyre was seven years old thanks to no riding through Covid.

Going good there GM, and you buddy? That's good about the little one, as I said the bastard fell out as I moved the wheel. Any idea why with the big one it needs outside/inside direction?

Going good mate thanks, honestly no, I've just always popped it back the way it came out, 3 times in total so far, the little bugga has fallen out each time, my first softail lol

Could be a hangover from the tapered roller bearing with separate seals days, where the slightly rounded edge of the spacer went through the seal.
I've got a mix of bearings on the Sportster, the converted Fatboy front wheel on the back has sealed bearings  the front spoked 21 has tapered rollers.

Thanks GM and obisteve. All back (well almost) together. Slip on's to be fitted. The small (disc side) spacer, no wonder I couldn't see the prick before disassembly as it sat in the recess in the frame out of sight. Not really happy with the mob who fitted the tyre. Noticed a nick in the rim (chrome solids) which wasn't there before and the belt drive sprocket scratched. Lesson learnt.

I put my axel in with the nut on the pipe side, have done it for many years, no issues and you don't have to pull pipes no more 😁

Good advice GM. You can get the caliper off with your pipes in place?
