I’m at my wits end the Jack shaft won’t move across far enough to engage with the ring gear on the clutch basket I’ve replace worn bits in solenoid replaced Jack shaft with a one piece all ball racing one still the same problem. The only thing I can replace now is the starter motor any help would be great

Was the solenoid plunger the same length as the original one you
Pulled out as some of the repair kits come with a shorter length
For sportsters  not big twin  other wise maybe starter clutch
Inside the nose cone is worn out most of the parts are the same as
Toyota  80s  cars Nippon denso , good luck

Yes it’s in the nose cone of the starter so you will have to remove the whole starter motor
Which is a pain in the arse   You can get it out with oil tank still in the bike just take battery out
And undo the mount bolts for the oil tank so it can move a bit , or just take the tank completely out
The two starter bolts are pain to get at normally capscrews   , you’ll have to take primary cover and
Jackshaft out two , just a thought how old/ charged up is your battery

What was wrong Robbo? Was it blocked up in the throwout shaft space?

When I put the 2 starter side buy side and push the button mounted on the solenoid the new starter motor spline pushed out all the way where as the old one only moved about half so not sure why something to do with stater clutch inside the nose cone

I could wrong but I think the starter clutch is on the armature side of the starter that may not affect the throw plunger side , was the push button
On the old starter firm to push in  about the same as the new one
