Well it didn't take long for someone you know to be a victim of youth crime. Our good friends were the victim of a break and enter on Monday at Caloundra while they slept. A 10yr old girl got in via a doggie door in the laundry opened the front door and let in two other girls aged 12 and 15. The took a laptop , purse , phone and wallet but left with the BMW X5. Less than a hour later police saw the vehicle doing high speeds on the bruce highway heading south but due to police requirements are unable to pursue. The next time the vehicle was spotted was on social media with one child standing up with her torso out the sunroof. A day later the car was spotted and wedged in by plain clothes detectives and the girls tried to ram their way out but were arrested at the scene. The car is fucked and will be a write of in my view, luckily fully insured.

It's a rental place while their new home is being built. They don't have a dog.

again, terrible that your friends should endure such a thing  - but i have never thought "doggie doors" to be very secure, so have never had them for my dogs...i understand the rental situation in this case - i wonder if insurance could be void from such unsecured "doggie door"???

Not sure about the insurance for the doggie door but they told me they were made to feel uncomfortable by questions regarding where the keys to the BMW where in the house.

actually, would it not be landlords responsibility for premises security / locks if questions were asked?

Most doggie doors have a cover or latch to secure the door when it is not in use.
The landlord is not liable if you leave the back door open.

so it would depend whether there was provision to secure this particular doggie door by the landlord...??

No idea. I would be screwing a temporary cover over it if it was me.

Had a theft from a builders shed on a work site once. Set up a 6' crowbar leaning against the back of the door. Went to work on the monday morning and the door was wide open and the crowbar was laying on the ground in front of the open doorway. There was nothing taken and the shed was never visited after hours again.

This is one thing I totally respect about America, the right to remove an intruders body parts with a shot gun.
