    1. Toyota RAV4
It’s almost fitting that one of Australia’s favourite new cars also has one of the longest wait times, with dealers nominating an eye-watering three-year wait on the RAV4 Hybrid and up to two years for the petrol versions.

    Crazy.
We waited 9 months for our RAV Cruiser Hybrid which arrived last July. I’m quite happy with it so given the wait time I ordered another one last month, same spec, colour etc. Figured mine will be around four years old by then so best get in now.
Yes I’d like to go full EV (ie EV6 GT) but range anxiety aside, while our power generation remains at 91% from fossil fuels the carbon savings don’t add up. (91% figure’s from Geoscience web site)
If Toyota ever release their hydrogen cars for sale rather than lease, count me in.

Study I read suggests that even in the worst case scenario of the battery being made in fossil fuel heartland and the EV being charged in a similar environment the vehicle still produces savings in overall emissions in it's lifetime of 22% over a diesel and 28% over a petrol equivalent vehicle, still significant, figures are around 80% if made and charged in Sweden, still be a sad day when internal combustion dies.

Yep, wife wants a Corolla Cross Hybrid. Dealer said 12 month wait, but looking at the car carrier boats parked around Port Kembla (good vantage point of Pt Kembla from Stanwell Tops) waiting to dock, I'm thinking much longer. Late last year I took delivery of a new Isuzu MUX and when I ordered that the salesman said "leave a deposit and if you change your mind before the vehicle hit's our shores, you can get a full refund". I only waited 3 months for that. This time I asked about the refund policy and the reply "you will be hit with a 5% admin fee". Looking at the amount of contracts on his desk, the ball is truly in the dealers court these day, but saying that, I wouldn't like to be a salesperson these days. Your commission only happens when you deliver the car.

Yeah, there are so many damn conflicting reports. Makes it hard to know which to believe.
The question for me is on that word “lifetime” both Nissan and Volvo, agree that the savings can be made but when?
Volvo did a really balanced report, looking at the vehicles total lifecycle from build to its final recyclable components and reckon the average break even point, after which emission savings are made is around 200,000ks. (Copy attached)
Also attached is the latest graph from Nissan. Australia, with its predominantly fossil fuel powered stations sits at the left.
We’re all different but I only drive around 5,000k per year  so based on Volvos estimates I’ll need to keep my nice new EV for 40 years before I hit that break even point. OOPS, the battery’s only rated for 10 years. I think the average distance per car in Aust is 20,000 klm per year so even then it’d be 10 years.
BTW for me, living in the hills, the RAV hybrid’s using an average of 5.9L/100k or 4.6 in the city. Not that special, my 16 year old Corolla wagon uses 6.
Maybe I should move to Tassie, nice clean hydro power down there.

    Thanks for that 👍
Don't move to Tassie, it's cold.....
Good roads for riding though, bit tempting given the amount of family I have down that way as well.

I was down there on a bike back in the day .  One of  the best holiday's Ive ever had.
If I go again it will probably be with a campervan or something similar.
