XL1200N LED neutral light issue

G'day g'day! Wondering if anyone has any advice - I have a 2012 XL1200N and the neutral light has not worked since purchased about six months ago. Took it into Harley recently and they said it's a very common issue and they could replace the instrument assembly, but that would be about $410 plus labour.

To avoid forking out that much for the sake of a neutral light, I'm trying to fix it myself. I thought it may be the led itself but when I put a voltmeter on it, the light came on. So the led itself works.

I checked the wires coming out the back of the PCB - no obviously loose wires etc.

I disconnected the safety switch on the other side of the bike, and the voltmeter showed a reading (around 9v) but neutral light did not come on.

The bike will start in neutral without the clutch lever pulled in. I assume this means the switch is okay?

Next step is to pull the tank off and check the wiring and connections, but before I do that does anyone have any further suggestions or tests I could do? Could it be the instrument cluster even though the led comes on when I touch it with the voltmeter?

    Cheers

You obviously have a few skills Tess, the electrical diagnostic manual for your bike might be worth a read, you can find pdf versions online for your year/model, I prefer the hardcopy but they can be both expensive and slow to get.

Haha maybe skills but maybe just a combination of persistence and curiosity 😂

I found a free pdf of the electrics, got it printed and bound - now it's waiting at Officeworks for me to collect! $9 in colour. Bloody bargain 😄

Get down to Officeworks and pick up your manual.
Assume the Dealer knows what he is talking about (not always the case).
Work out which wire is the live feed from the neutral switch at the instrument assembly connectors.
With ignition on, slip the bike in and out of neutral and use a test lamp to verify the live feed.
If the Dealer is right, your test light should come on and off at that connector.
If it does, use the circuit diagram to track it through the instrument wiring.
If not, The Dealer is wrong, and you will have to confirm the neutral switch is working and track it from there.

I had my blinker led dash light stop working twice on my 2011 fxst,  cost under $100.  As all the lights are on a board.   Took about 10 min to swap. So i am guessing it is the led diode.
