Was riding around aimlessly on my 1970 Honda 750 four today when I went through Richmond (Tas). I saw a sign that said "Vintage Motorcycle Show" which was on at the Richmond town hall which is about as big as a schools classroom. Paid the $5 entry fee and went inside where there were maybe 20 -30 bikes. There was 4 Broughs and an array of Vincents but have seen most of them at other shows here in the past. Took a pic of an old Brough that I don't remember seeing before...(see pic). But there was one bike in the town hall I had never heard of or seen before.
    A "BAYTON" 1000cc American motorcyle.
In a stroke of luck the owner was there and I had a yak with him.
He said there were 7 of these bikes in existence (they were made by a mob who used to make sewing machines...a familiar story). I quizzed him about the double chain final drive and he said one of the chains was to start it and the other was to drive it once running.
It had only 1 gear once up and going.
Asked the bloke if he had actually ridden it and he said, no. Because he had only just had the rear hub manufactured for him from someone in Adelaide and got it on the bike a day or so ago for the bargain price of 15 grand (yeah, just for the hub).
The Richmond town hall was as dark as fuck so the pictures are fuckter than fuck but you might be able to see the rough idea.
    Cheers
Oh yeah, check out the bizzo for the carbide headlight and tail light.

15 grand to get a new hub machined ?  That's commitment.  Do you know if he had the old one to copy from?

I guess he must have had something to get the new one made, a drawing or something.
He said the bike had the wrong type of hub on it when he bought it. Also said there was a lot going on inside the hub with a chain for the pedal start and another one for the final drive.
It'd be pretty hard to get parts for them if there is only 7 on the planet. Not the sort of bike you would ride with a gut-full of piss or magic mushrooms.

Great pics FC. The Dayton is interesting, but the Velocette in the Italian frame rebadged as an Indian is a classic commentary on hard times in 2 countries motorcycle industries. By all accounts it was a better handling frame than anything Velocette made.

Sheesh!, good call Steve. I did not know anything about that. Just thought it was an injun.
There were actually 4 Broughs in that tiny hall as well and I overheard the bloke talking about them. They were worth as much as houses for the average punter.
