Swap speakers in Harley Davidson wired helmet headset

Hi folks.. I have the wired Harley headset (riding a RGS, with 7 pin connector added)..  The speakers are about 60mm diameter.  I'm trying to buy a new helmet but most only have room for about a 45mm speaker in the cutaway.  Rather than try to enlarge the cavity in the helmet, I want to swap the speakers for something better and smaller at the same time by cutting the wire and joining the new speakers to the comms unit.

Has anyone done this?  I've spoken to a few small electronics shops (I'd rather have someone do a neater job that I would do), but a couple have cautioned me that the wires are perhaps not designed to be soldered and may have a core that is destroyed by the heat in the process, damaging the signal.  Blaa blaa blaa.. I've never heard of such a thing, but now concerned that my plan is flawed.

Hopefully someone has tried and succeeded already...

Old age, operating Caterpillar Dozers nil hearing protection, stupid old days, shooting and guns will do it too. Like to piss off shit from Road Glide, never use it cept ta listen to footy and cricket in garage, would light bike considerably.

Spot on Ski I have nasty tinnitus all day long (from guns and construction mainly )  paid 5 k and the tinnitus is gone until I take them out.
It's amazing to have incredible stereo sound in my head and nobody knows, phone calls, suri at the ready.
    Living in the future bro.

My head sets are the genuine HD ones that came with the Ultra Limited. Yes they are bigger than the recess in my helmet like you say. What I did was push some of the lining away and used a hole saw of the appropriate size and slowly hand turned it through the polystyrene til the recess was deep enough for the speakers. Then I just dug it out, cleaned it up, stuck a piece of velcro in the hole and another bit on the speaker. Job done and then put the lining back where it came from.
Years ago with helmets they either had no recess or it was bigger. I think that nowadays they have a smaller recess because a lot of people use the blue tooth type set up and those speakers are generally smaller than the ones you and I have. HD used to supply a smaller speaker years ago but they also had smaller wires and were prone to breaking. Mine and my wife's broke somewhere in WA and I picked up another set in Albany ($200 or so).
Bloodog is happy with his set up and I am happy with mine.
