Well as a result of wrecking my brand new lid on the Cape York trip i looked at a different option. The open face i chose is available, but difficult to get due to the cost $450 not many people stock it. I found the helmet overseas (England) for $230 but had sent a email to a Australian supplier asking about availability prior. The English company was quick off the mark and the deal was done.
The Australian company told me the helmet wasn't in stock, wanted payment in full ($450) and no idea of a delivery date....oh and once the order was placed no refunds!
Fedex just sent me a email and my new helmet will be on my door 1st March before 5pm for $220 less than buying in Australia.

No Evo as the cost is less than $1000. Generally goods less than that don't incur extra tax.

If you buy through ebay, you will pay GST on items less than $1000. If you buy privately, you may avoid paying the GST.
Customs collect the tax on anything over $1000.

not to argue but i interpreted the new (not so new now) laws to now tax under $1000 as well....if so, i am inquisitive as to how thorough they are with that coz i always thought it would be a logistical nightmare

yes that was my take on it too - hence my ceasing to buy from overseas since then....but as i mentioned above, surely they would be hard pressed to monitor every private small business transaction such as PB's??....ebay aside

They're generally terrible, but in my experience, it depends a lot on who the shipping company is.

I reckon Ive bought probably 30-40k worth of gear over the last decade, and paid import tax twice.

Companies like DHL have the logistics and ability to facilitate tax collection at the border. So a package will come into Aus, go to DHL, where they'll do the requisite tax collection before releasing it and getting it on its way.

If someone is using USPS (which I think is like US AusPost equiv) it generally goes straight through. The guy I use now does that and generally invoices in the 100's not the 1000's the goods are actually worth, and it still never gets picked up.

Fedex are the carrier on this occasion. The only hold up in the whole gig was my error.....i put down my PO Box as the delivery address....they require a personal address. My error. They had the delivery moving within 2hrs of that update.
