Penright oil

    Hey guys, 
    I've always used good quality Penright 20W-50+ zinc Mineral oil every 6 months / 5000kms in my Evo and Twin cam bikes..

    What's the go with the new M8 motors? 
    What is the preferred oil for engine? Penright? Full synthetic? Mobil 1?
    Sorry for another oil thread, just not used to these new motors.

    What oil is in it now? How many km’s? I would use what has previously been run and continue too mineral or synthetic. But I personally like a good quality mineral as mentioned like penrite. Main thing is replacing oil often as you do and everything will be fine. Just my opinion as there are many others on this topic.

    Its just oil....  Use what Harley suggests.

    yeah don't over think it, both mineral and syn 20/50 work in M8's, with the syn you can have longer service intervals (i do 8000k's on Penrite MC 20/50 syn) and the syn apparently can handle heat a little better too

    Good theory... I priced out Harley oil vs the other esoteric brands and its normally on par or cheaper.  So for me its a no brainer to just pop down to the dealer for my supplies.

    Now a $30 nut is a different question.... BUT if I was already at the dealer then I would buy it as its cheaper (at an hourly rate) than me spending time going to Bunnings and then machining or buggering around to get things to fit.

    If we followed what Harley suggests ........ we'd be trading in every 2 years.
    Besides, it's a 230 km round trip to the closest dealer.  I can buy Penrite HPR30 36 km away, and the old POS has travelled a looong and strange way on that so far.

    f...i havent set foot in a dealership for donkeys - so "its a no brainer" that i can pick up my Penrite at any number of outlets in town easy as...& an acorn nut is an acorn nut - no matter where you go to get it - fk knows why your having to machinine yours :-/

    Just trying to keep on topic. 
    Does the M8 motor require / significantly benefit from Penright full synthetic?  Or is the HPR 30 Penright mineral just as good if I'm doing 6 monthly / 5000km oil changes anyway?

    As stated mate it does not require synthetic and will not benefit. Just follow the manual. you are doing good service intervals so that’s were the benefits are. And again as said It’s Just oil don’t over think it. Cheers

    HPR30= 20/60 yes it would be ok but will not be ok with your clutch

    Was never going to use it in the primary case.

    Oil is Oil   when it has dripped onto the garage floor and you have to clean it up.
    Oils ain't Oils   when you are deciding what to put in your engine, primary or transmission.
    If the bike is a 'keeper', do your research; if you change your bike every couple of years, it doesn't really matter.
    Harley oil will get you past the warranty period, that's all they care about.
    And I would be using synthetic in any engine after 2000.

    Oils ain't oils when you cook a stir fry using 90 weight gear oil.
    Or when you you put olive oil in your gearbox.

    Getting back on track, have you tuned your M8 for better AFRs? How hot does it run? Has it got the later oil pump?
    Probably a good idea to run full synthetic if its running lean and hot, with the early oil pump. Penrite make an excellent one that I've used for 100,000 kms in one of my Vic's, after using their mineral HPR 30 for 350,000 kms in the Sporty.
    It's a telling sign when an improved oil pump is fitted early in a motors production life.

    Thanks Obisteve, not tuned yet. Still in the middle of a 117" build. 

    What do you consider a suitable oil pump? I don't have the latest HD 8 lobe pump, mine was the version just before that (2019) and am still on the fence whether to upgrade the pump or not.
