Just bought a 2006 softail standard.  Wanting to know why the ride is back breaking/uncomfortable

Welcome to world of Softail suspension!  plus crappy handling, BUT they do look good from a styling perspective

Love my 2001 Nightrain, but yes the suspension is nothing to write home about. Currently run Progressive front and rear. Better but still not the best. Next rebuild I plan on looking at other options.

You could always set it up like this

What the others said. It’s 16 year old suspension that was pretty average even when new. Plenty of upgrade options though.
    Welcome to the forum.

I swapped out the stock suspension on my 98 Softail for lowering shocks, so I have less travel. I also have a Lepera Bare Bones.
I did 1000's of ks with no problems.
I now have a Fatbob with a stock seat and it does take a while to adjust when I go back to the Evo.
The suspension does bottom out occasionally with a pillion on the back.

Give it a go for a while, you will probably get used to it.

lowering only make matters worse on already limited travel of the old softail system....basically its a crap design....i have fournales on the rear that helps - it never bottoms out now at least
oh & i have a kidney belt in the saddlebags for backup lol
