Hi I now have a Harley with an m8 114 motor 9k old. It has rienhart 4.5 pipes. I want to get a full stage one upgrade. Quoted $1000 for the air cleaner and a dyno. Is a dyno neede for a stage 1?

Hi Pete and welcome to the forum.
What air cleaner does it currently run and what are you replacing it with?
A good proper dyno tune from a reputable tuner will set you back around $600-$700 where I am based.
Potentially - $1000 for a good hi-flow breather and a proper dyno tune is about the right sort of money.
Make sure it's an actual dyno tune though, and not just an ECM flash. That's not the same as a dyno tune.
The question of whether or not you "need" to do it is probably a matter of contention. Most off-the-shelf map downloads should get a stage 1 setup running really well. A dyno tune could really smooth the torque curve out and maybe eke out a couple more HP, but it's entirely up to you on whether or not that's worth $700.
If you're going to go to a stage 2 or higher though, a dyno tune is definitely required.

don't the stage 1 include changing the tuner

then it starts the "discussion" on the best tuner

    Hi Pete
You need to check and see whether it has had a tune.
The reinhart slip-ons are a decent upgrade and can increase performance quite a bit. If the bike is still running the stock tune, you should get that sorted.
Running a closed loop tune allows the ecm/bcm to adjust for small changes in air flow.
Those slip-ons would produce substantial changes in fuel demand and it should have been re-tuned.
The question about the air cleaner is also dependent on air flow.
If you put a decent air cleaner on and it flows a lot more than stock get a tune.
If it does not flow a lot more than stock , you will probably not need a tune.
How long are you going to keep the bike ? Are you going to get attached to it ?
If you learn how to tune yourself, you can easily compensate for modifications and make changes to the tune in your riding range.

Pete, a tuned bike is a beautiful thing, as has been said an air cleaner and dyno tune for a grand sounds about right.

Do you still have to outlay for a tuner to do the tune?

I was thinking tune licence but good point cause if that grand includes a module then it will be a flash not a tune.

Well if you’re brisbane based then I’d be buying the air cleaner from your dealer of choice, but take it over to fred at procycles at slacks creek for the dyno tune, no contest. Did the bike come with a tuning module?

    Hi no tuning module

Okay, in that case i would say that for your $1000 you’re getting a breather kit, a tuner, and a flash tune. Which is still totally fine price-wise, and necessary for the bike for what you’re doing. If you’re getting actual dyno time and a proper tune, as well as those items above - then that’s a great deal for a thousand bucks. Go for it mate, and let us know how you get on.

    Hi no tuning module

Check with the previous owner to see if he has a module and you didn't get it.
If those reinharts went on without a tune it will be lean as fuck.
Or it may be a limited licence like pv.
