What gaskets, and are you doin adjustable pushrods as well or does he have to take rocker boxes off?

12 hrs seems like it's taking the piss though.

4-5 hours is a bit rich to be honest (its actually about 2 hours work, but 4 leaves a little wiggle room).  Cam and Rods is a no brainer for a competent mechanic.

12 hours and I would be looking for a new mechanic - unless thats his way of saying he needs the bike for the entire day.

Just clarify the effort needed vs the time he wants the bike.  If its 4 hours effort then 'maybe given your looking at bearings and Carb rebuild', but if its 12 hours effort then thats just a con job.

I have swapped out cams in the old FXR MANY times 3 so far and its actually a really easy job to do if you have a service manual handy.  What bearings are replacing - I know the early inner cam bearings needed replacing on certain year models, but the outer is a simple bush in the cam housing.  Carb rebuild is easy as chit too so you could do that first yourself to get confidence - depends on where you bought your Carb kit from (I suppose you could also replace the intake rubbers as well given you will have to go that far in).

I like em, saves time, can set the lifter to whatever depth I like, others will argue it's an unnecessary expense perpetuated by the lazy or inept, I still like em.

I like them to.  Have run them for 25 years in the FXR - from the thick alloy ones to the thinner steel.  I like running them an extra few flats tight which helps with any tappet noise.

The big bonus is that you do not need to remove the rocker covers if swapping out the cam etc.  Even on the initial install you just cut the OEM rods with some bolt cutters and toss them.
