Any thoughts on 96 ci engine upgrades without taking another mortgage out?

I think you nailed it with your first question about 103 barrels etc. A decent tq cam and you would be surprised. You could even sus out a decent cam for your existing motor. Cost depends on if your competent with the spanners or paying someone.

Install a good cam, intake, a good 2-1 exhaust and good dyno tuner, boom, 95-100hp & 100 + tq in your 96ci. 2 grand.

My bike is a 96ci done out to a stage 1. Did a fair bit of research and best bang for your buck is fitting a different cam for a good increase in power and torque. Anyway for myself I am leaving my bike as is just with the stage 1 goes good enough for me I had a custom dyno tune done which I felt improved the way the bike rode cheers.

I put a torque cam as well as the normal stage one bits in mine, added a good Dyno  tune and it made a huge difference, especially midrange/ overtaking power.

Mate Maximus is a decent tuner, your half way there, Andrews 48, tune it, I've got a set 103 barrels and pistons in the shed but honestly unless you really want to get stuck into it mods wise that 48 cam and a tune will get that 96" purring nicely.

Cheers GM, I like your thoughts… I just thought while it’s apart it’s not going to cost that much extra to have them installed. Are you in Melbourne can you recommend an installer for the cam?

I'm in Townsville mate unfortunately, changing cams doesn't mean heads off and if you want to go down that track your options open up to whatever your wallet can deal with which is why I asked what you are wishing for?
I'll let one of the southern folk recommend a local wrench for you, Hoody might be a bit far over the border.

Legend! That almost would have worked for me…we almost moved to Townsville last year!! Thanks for all your information. I know she’s no sports bike so mainly after a little more grunt and the beefy idle! I will use my a local place down here he’s said about $1800 for a cam install and re tune.

Happy to help, that's not a bad price considering, he probably would anyway but just mention changing the inner cam bearings out for SE ones or the like full complement roller ones, I know those particular Andrews cams will work great in a stock 96", there are others that do as well, let us know how it turns out.

Will do mate…. I think it’ll be a winter project now as it’s just about time for dust collecting in another month or so in cold old Melbourne town!

From what i've experienced $1800 cams and tune is fair and not uncommon, but provided is a Dynotune in the mix, then she set for a while.Worked for me, was like 2G's by very well known Dyno-tuner, who turned me around on my thoughts for cams. I went with his sugested cams, he installed, dyno-ed and I could not be happier. He's in SA. Five years later and I still have that grin.

Cost for ride in and ride out needs to consider cost of cams, inner bearing, gasket, adjustable pushrods, lifters, oil, labour and the dyno time (assuming you have the timing module or dyno tune includes use of their license). $1,800 is pretty good for that these days when you consider a dyno tune usually costs about $600. I remember it costing me about $1,800 ten years ago but lots of things have increased in price since then.

I’ve heard the cam change to the m8 engine brings about a bigger improvement again relative to what it does to the twin cam engine but still a worthwhile improvement on the twin cam.

The Andrews 48 cam is a good cam as recommended by others and would be my automatic choice if you had auto compression releases which are oem in the heads on the 103 engine. Without them, the 48 cams might still be a good choice for the 96 engine but I’d personally go with an s&s ezy start cam like a 583 or similar for easier starting

Hey Mate I’m looking at doing the same with my 103, I got an over the desk quote from a Melbourne dealer last week $2500 supply and fit Screaming Eagle torque cams and tune, bring it back after 1000ks for a dyno tune for extra $800.
Waiting for the detailed email quote, not sure if this is a good price or not as this is my 1st Harley

Hey, my quote was at whiskey throttle in Thomastown, Tyson and crew all seem like decent fellas..yes $1800 was supply and fit with a the tune from the maximus database…Dyno was going to be an extra $800 as well I think. What cam were you looking at? Cheers
