Having owned an FLHT for 120,000 kms I have to say that my bike is the best thing I’ve ever owned for racking up big km days.

I can still travel 800 kms plus on the old girl in a day and feel fine at the end of it. It’s what they are built to do.

Dead right. A few of us are toying with heading to the tip this year.....dreading the 2000klm road route to get to Port Douglas on my BMW 1200GS. Have done a lap of the map on the street glide without a single thought of long days in the saddle.

Hey Pauly, post on here as you start to firm up the dates for a trip north. I might be up for some long distance adventure, either on the Sporty or one of the Victories.

Tell me to piss off if you think I'm crashing your party.

Steve i would never do that...have ridden close to you before so know you how to ride. At this stage there are 5 bikes going up but wk issues for some of the team has been a stumbling block as they are self employed builders/chippies etc. One of the boys has done it 6 times and has several resident contacts on the way up onside to park overnight under the carport etc so relying on him a bit for those contacts. One of those residents has a chopper that is rather handy in the event of a major drama (contribution required) Will give you notice once some dates are penciled in. Several of the boys want to do the telegraph track so that would be a HUGE challenge on either bike but nothing in concrete yet.

OK, so people are taking real off road bikes. While I'm confident I could get any of my bikes up the Penninsula Development Rd and the Northern Bypass, the Telegraph Rd would be a stretch even for the Sporty, apart maybe for a short detour to Fruitbat Falls for a good camp-site.
I've taken it to Fraser Island for a play in the sand, but steep muddy creek crossing exits aren't it's strong point.
The thing that impressed me about Million $ Bogans trip north was how good the Northern Bypass is now.

Yes the bypass is really a dirt highway now days with commodores and falcons doing the rounds, seasons permitting. The bikes are 1x 1250 BMW, 2X KTM, 1X CF Moto and my 1200gs

Myself and my tribe went up to cape York via the telegraph track 10 yrs ago in the wife’s Mazda 4x4.
The development road I could have done in a Hyundai excel, although it would be rattled to death by the time I got back to the bitumen at Lauren.
The telegraph track was a different story, you definitely need a Fourbie.
The biggest bit of advice I could give is to pick the time of year to go.
Definetly not in the wet season and not during school holidays.
We went in June and left to come home at the start of the school holidays and the four wheel drives were pouring in. All the roadhouse/ campground owners said that their grounds would be packed because of school holidays. It was true.
Keep it in mind if you do it.

    Pauly,

I retire in a few weeks. Am planing on riding the PA to the tip. Keep me in the loop on your dates, would be good to catch up for a beer if our paths cross. That is if you do not mind being seen in public with a Harley rider.

Taking the Pan America. Have to go to CQ first to help on the family farm for a month or so then back to SA. Probably sometime in July or August will be heading north again hopefully all the way to the tip.

Got nothing against Beemers, own a couple myself. Most of them look OK but like every family there is a couple of ugly cousins in the mix.

Nothing I've got would cope with Nolan's Brook running waist deep, and I'd be real concerned putting anything but the '80 XL 250 onto the log bridge at Cypress Ck.
I've regularly had the Sporty with creek water up to the top of the primary case, but it's a fine line after that until the aircleaner's sucking water. The engine was still running the night I got washed off the flooded crossing, flood level post was showing a little bit under .5 metre.
