What is it with baggers?

    Well I see we are starting to follow America with most of the dealership's stocking more and more baggers.
    Don't get me wrong if you are into a lot of touring I understand but how many are buying these bikes and never use them for what they are made for. I also know it's not my money buying these bikes so why should I care,  it's because I am just curious when there could be better bikes out there for every day use. And yes I have ridden a few baggers and to be honest I find them way to heavy for my liking. Hey guys just my thoughts only I am not saying baggers are bad bikes they are great for their intended use I just don't understand why our dealership's have to follow American trends.

    Its the big rage in America at the moment. Your going to see a new range of lighter less full tourer spec bikes about to hit the show room. Start off with a road glide st. The dealers world wide for HD are following the lead of the motor company by making bikes that will capture new buyers in new segments for the Harley brand. Who would have thought HD would produce a world class adventure bike, i didnt, who thought they would be the first "brand" to bring out a electric bike. Each one of those models have brought a new audience to the brand and these new baggers will do the same.

    Fairings for an fxr are a big thing in the US. Lots of guys are going with fairings on softails and dynas .
    Then go back and look at the bikes from Sons of Anarchy.

    I've known several people who've bought baggers because it's the thing that big boys are supposed to do.  Only to realise that they're shit bikes, and end up selling them for something lighter after they've dropped them a few times  I've never understood them.  There's much better touring options than baggers, adv bikes, sport touring etc.
    Same kind of mentality that makes people buy these American style utes.

    Each to their own. I personally own 17 bikes each one of them is good in it's own way. Currently my daily ride is either the PAS or Ultra. Both very different bikes from different ends of the biking spectrum. Also enjoy taking the 900ss desmo out for a spin on a Sunday afternoon ride. Not to say that one is better than the other, just different.

    We bought the Ultra on a whim once when we had a layover in Brisbane. M&W had it there for a great price and the missus really liked the queen seat on the back so we bought it and rode it home to Adelaide. She has a propensity to fall asleep while we are doing the long days and nearly fell off the back of the BMW once so it made sense to get something that made her comfortable on the back. After all happy wife is a happy life.

    Personally I see a lot of guys riding bikes out on the open road that I would not ride around the block but, you know what?, good on everyone for getting out there and it is this difference between us all that makes it great to pull up somewhere and check out each others bikes. Probably the motorcyclist's equivalent to dogs sniffing each other's arses.

    Old grumpy chestnut....where do we start? Tourers are designed just for that...touring! So like the constant advice asked by members on here "what cam" what tires"even what color should i get perhaps dont buy a tourer if you want to race your mates R1 through the mountains or do a track day. Its going to disappoint you and maybe even dump you on your soft head. But if you bought one to do weekend away with the Mrs and all the gear they are the ducks nuts. I have done many back to back 1000klm days with the Mrs fully loaded without a ache or sore back etc. I also have a BMW 1200gs and although a lovely bike start getting fidgety around 500-600klm but it can go where my tourer cant. As Wade said each bike brings something different to the table.

    Thanks for the replies so far. As I said in my original post these are my thoughts and opinions only. Ride what you enjoy as I said baggers have there place. I mean I wouldn't buy a 50cc scooter to tour on but I must admit wouldn't buy a bagger to commute on either. Check out YouTube in America they are all going to baggers, do they tour on them not many do, they are more interested in a customised style. Hey it their rides and their money but as I said before we seem to follow the American trends and what I hate seeing is good bikes in the Harley range getting phased out because of these trends. Anyway anyone who reads this post don't take this as a personal attack if you own a bagger because it's not, hell I ride a Heritage so it's kind of a bagger of sorts and my favourite bike in the new Softail range is the Sport Glide a mini bagger and Harley are mad to discontinue this model lucky we still have it in Australia at this time.

    have 3 mates get on to sport glides this last week,one traded a street glide and one a heritage,both fine ,tidy bikes. the other added to her v rod.

    Choco i guess it comes down to what's selling as to models being stopped etc. From a factory/profit perspective no use manufacturing models that don't sell.

    I can get around the latest trend (and oxymoron) of "Performance Baggers" but jesus you need some cash to sort a bike out to that level.

    There are no FXRT fairings in SOA.  I didn't say there was.

    The first posts were about the proliferation of baggers and then, lighter, less full spec tourer bikes coming onto the market.
    I made the comment that there are a lot of softails and dynas in the US appearing with fairings.
    On other forums there are discussions about FXRs set up for touring with fairings, and some with tour packs.
    I reckon this look has a lot to do with the bikes featured on SOA .
    So my comments were not about bagger popularity, more about the bagger look becoming popular.
    And HD may be following the market in that direction.
