Hi to all, my first post here so I will apologise for my ignorance straight up
Had Jap bikes all my life, now retired and about to order my HD Freewheeler, there is one at my local dealer

I have lots of questions about the M8 114, but, I think the best approach is one at a time

OK, done lots of reseach on you tube about this question but I think you guys would be better able to set me straight

    Cooling the M8
My approach here would be to get a much larger oil cooler or if that is not possible get a suplimentary one so I would have two inline.
Can the oil be cooled to far with a larger oil cooler, not to sure if there is any other way to cool the oil apart from a larger oil pan, even if this is a possibility

I plan on towing a light weight tear drop camper on my travels, also looki g forward to joining the HD community
    Cheers Steve

Someone is going to say 'apology not accepted' and tell yah to fook off!  BUT not me... Welcome to the club matey.
I have no idea what an M8 is as is new than 1986 which is when my bike memory stopped, but there are a few noobs here on these fancy new racing harlys that are very opinionated and will chime in with lots of really really helpful information.

Welcome and the best thing for cooling is get it properly tuned, people will chuff and chortle but it's a fact that the tunes in them cause a lot of heat straight outa the box.

Welcome Antic,  not to keen on the look of the Freewheeler,   i do like the ultraTriGlide, especially if touring a fair bit.

    Yep, agreed
I will be putting a clear touring fairing on it and a rear seat with arm rests, should be cheaper and lighter but still have a good look
One comment I did notice was a tune might help the cooling, I assume from that the 114 might be running a bit lean from the factory

As under warrenty I can only use the HD tuner. Not keen on fiddling with engine mapping, but if this is a possibility I will need to find a good HD Technician as at this point I do not.

I cant see any issues with more cooling of the oil, as long as it is not detrimental to the viscosity
I don't think it would be an issue

as far as towing, I would doubt with the torque of a 114 or HD engine of any size would scare you off
people have been towing with much smaller setups without a problem

A lot of the oil cooler and adaptors will have a thermostat that should take care of that. It is import to run the oil at it correct temp so that it flows into all the little crevices and protects the engine.

A big consideration is the type of riding you intend to do. If it’s weekend or holiday touring outside of cities and you’re not stopping much then a lot of heating problems aren’t too big a deal. Agree that a good tune with extra fuel helps a lot

Gidday Antic and welcome .. depending on which state you live in the Oil cooling situation will be different , to a degree , pardon the pun .

I am in Good Old Sunny Qld and i reckon any type of extra cooling is a must up here in summer time especially .. but other considerations need to be taken into account .. as already mentioned the tune is important .. other things would be if you intend to do any motor work which raises the compression .. also the weight of your 3 wheeler should be taken into account , extra weight extra heat produced in motor .

I have a 2017 Road Glide Special with quite a few motor mods and i run a Harley fan assisted oil cooler up front plus also the fan behind the rear cylinder to extract hot air when caught in traffic .

Getting rid of the stock Harley pipes and air cleaner should be something to discuss with your Harley shop or preferably a aftermarket Harley shop .

Where about`s are you , there are plenty of decent qualified Harley mechanics around .

Not sure about down south but the Dealerships up here .. Gasoline .. Wackers .. Gold Coast Harley .. and others all use aftermarket stuff on their bikes these days as well as keeping your warranty in tact .. which opens up a heap of options for you .

Keen on seeing some pics when you get around to it .. Cheers , enjoy the life style .

    Hey Tim
Thank you all for the warm welcome
I am at the Northern Rivers NSW, my nearest dealer is Coffs.
Historically I have reservations about Dealers and thier Technicians workmanship

Coming from the motor industry Dealers can be shoddy and workmanship is poor, I am hopping I am wrong about the Harley Dealer's

My preference is to locate a good Technician, someone I can trust who can work on my bike if need be

I Will be towing a light teardrop camper about 250kgs with electric brakes only when moving between sites.Otherwise just the trike.

Looking forward  to my big trip soon.

The bike will be getting a big workout so cooling is important
I have thought about  the fans as well, can you hear it over the burble of the motor

North Coast VTwins , have been great over the years, fixing bikes that broke down or mechanical failures,  on a Sat morning. Even taking parts off a bike on showroom floor.  He also owns the dealership at Port Macquarie

Gidday Antic .. regards to the noise of fans on oil coolers .. the front one with the oil cooler i don`t hear .. the extraction fan behind rear cylinder i seem to be able to hear at lights if it kicks in , but definitely not an outrageous sound .

Mind you i do have fairly Loud exhaust so possibly would be able to hear them more with stock pipes .

I would Definitely search for a decent technician but until you find one it sounds like the guys at North Coast VTwins might be worth checking out .

Might also be worth asking the question about Brakes .. trikes are not the lightest bikes out there and also towing a little trailer will push the standard brakes a little more than what they were designed for .. just an thought .

Enjoy the open roads .. Cheers .
