Just chasing a bit of feedback. I have a stage 1 done to my bike I fitted a Screamin' Eagle air cleaner and put back on the original oval air cleaner cover. Now a few days ago a good mate remembered that he had a Wille G air cleaner trim cover sitting in his garage that he no longer wanted. Long story short it is now on my bike so with a full open air cleaner should I invest in a rain sock. Many different opinions on the net whether they work or not and these days 99% of my riding is just day rides, hell I have even taken off my saddle bags and sissy bar off my Heritage because I can't see myself doing any more touring. Sorry for the long post but I value the information I get on this forum. Photo of my new trim on the air cleaner it's a bit of a shitty photo taken in my garage it was a bit cramped.

Choco, I run a ventilator air filter on my dyna. Now for some reason the sock makes it compliant so if you get pulled over apparently you need to have that fitted. The other thing if you get caught in the rain they help disperse the water.

Most of the time I dont have mine on.

    Regards

Why don't you just use the original oval one again?. It will at least stop stones punching holes in the filter. I still use my original oval one even with a larger stage  4  type filter.

I am actually thinking of getting the round cover like the one I use to have on my Evo. The great thing is that if I take off the Wille G air cleaner trim I don't lose any money on it because a great brother gave it to me so all I have to do is return to him.

Round one is the go, keep most of the rain and debris out, I took mine off and put one of them SE front facing things in an attempt to get a bit more knee room, it did but then you gotta/should have a sock cause they don't like a big downpour, wide glide used to have a fit everytime it happened to it, funny though we talked about this some years back and a few blokes reckoned they never had an issue, beats me.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have now taken off the Wille G air cleaner trim and put back on my original oval cover. I am going to buy a chrome round cover I like that style over the oval shape plus it gives the air filter element a lot more protection cheers.

It “is” summer c. Why don’t you enjoy the filter and looks while the sun shines and put the full cover on later?

Most air cleaners will do the same thing as each other, particularly for stock or mildly modified bikes.

Go with what you like the look of. If it’s an open/exposed filter, it’s no biggie as you just carry a rain sock in your pocket on days where there’s a chance of it pouring rain. A bit of a drizzle doesn’t require a rain sock but when it pours it does. I avoid riding in shit weather anyway and only do when I have to (on a trip)

I would not bother.... I have a very open air cleaner and its survived even 'walls of water' rain storms without problems.

big downpour means different things to different people
I use my sock for big downpours, and dry and dusty days

if the rain sock is great for rain, or even dust, why not just leave it on all the time, if it makes no difference why bother

I am wondering how long the sock will last if you just leave it on?. The wind can be pretty harsh on fabric and I imagine that's why people don't just leave em on.

They need Rain Condoms!  Or fit a Hypercharger with the cute little flaps on the front to keep rain out.

Used to be you sprayed water into lawn
Mower engines at high revs to clean em out and dislodge carbon. Some engines have water injection. Don’t think it will be too detrimental for a hot Harley engine for short rides. What say the brains trust?

Its only water!  Its not going to combust or lean out the fuel air mix.  It will cool the intake charge though which is a good thing.

How far do you take this theory ?
Ride the bike underwater and the hypothesis starts to look not so great.
