    G'Day Lads and Ladies,

My street racing days faded about 30 years ago.
Finally got the old (90) Softail Custom after years of yearning.
Planning some decent cruises, but would love to drop a few revs at highway speeds.
What was the standard front pulley/sprocket on the FXSTC,..??
Initial research says 34T is the biggest front.
Thinking of going up 2 or 3 teeth over standard.
    Help appreciated.

    Morning ballbag
Congrats on getting your 90 softail.
I had an 89 softail and the first time I rode it on a highway I thought the gearing/revs were also too high. But that’s the way they are and evos are right in their sweet spot in top gear at 110-120kmh and there’s absolutely no harm in riding long distances at those revs. Lots of throttle response there too for overtaking and alike.

You could change one of the sprockets over for lower gearing but you’ll lose some acceleration and find yourself down changing gears to overtake on the highway. And your engine will lug more. I reckon keep it as it is and see if you can adjust your mindset to the higher revs. And if it’s the extra noise of the higher revs annoying you, get some ear plugs which are always good for highway riding anyway.

Enjoy the new bike mate. They don’t make them like that anymore. The last of the real harleys I reckon

I remember an old mate who had to replace his chain and sprockets on a 1200 sporty.
He was thinking the same as you ballbag.
From memory I think he bought a smaller back sprocket with the expectation it would drop the revs a bit at cruising speed. I  remember asking him if it made any difference and he said it did but he had to drop a gear to overtake whereas before he didn't have to.
He joined the forum a while back so he might chip in.
And don't listen to fatbag  !
Everybody knows the last "real Harley" was the 88 twin cam.

A 3.15 final drive ratio is pretty good on a 5 speed Evo for Australia.

Again from memory I think old mates sporty only had 4 gears.
    I think it was a 1986 or 1987 Evo

I have a 98 fxstc and I put an Ultima 6 speed in mine.
Not sure how the 90 compares with the 98 in terms of the gear ratios , but may be a very worthwhile mod if you plan to keep it.

Saw some Ultima triple tree forks on gt for 2k. I shudder to think how much one of their gearboxes would cost 214.

Bit over $1800 but shown as out of stock. Jireh Cycles do some pretty good deals on Ultima stuff. I paid about $600 with $200 shipping quite a few years ago. I have had my 98fxstc about 15 years and it was a very worthwhile mod. Goes well with a bump in compression and aftermarket cams. If Ballbank can do a front sprocket, he can do this.
