Interesting then that the Moto GP bikes are not equipped with ABS.
Could be just another step towards the riderless motorcycle, which seems to be the way cars are hell bent on going.

In racing fractions of a second make the difference between winning and loosing.  ABS braking is slightly slower than non-ABS braking.  A good rider/driver needs that extra control in braking.

In other words you might say ABS is for bad riders.

Not at all...ABS is for the average/above average person to stop a motorcycle quicker and with safety in a variety of situations. A ABS bike with the same rider will stop in a shorter distance than the same bike rider combo without ABS. A Abs bike can grab the brakes on the tar...run off the tar still with the front brake hard on , onto the gravel and still stop the bike....suggest you DONT try that on a non ABS  bike.

I can see there are benefits to having ABS. I can think of three times when I would have liked to have had it.
What about service intervals and procedures and costs ? I would like to hear more about that .

Apparently HD recommend to change brake fluid at least every 2 years on ABS bikes

Hd suggests every 24mths a full flush. Last one was about $70? from HD using their factory tool.  Car manufacturers recommend the same.

I knew it was 2 years but expected the service would cost more.
In a discussion on one of the US sites, a guy who has his own shop, says he insists on doing it for all his customers. But he says he bills them for the fluid, but not the time.
The service is supposed to be particularly important in colder climates due to condensation and moisture take-up, and the interval could probably be reduced in warmer climates , and then there are guys that do their own.

My flush was the result of a ABS pump issue....i did post at the time but due to the crappy search function couldn't find it to attach

$130 for front and $130 for the rear sure makes it and expensive brake bleed.
Hope whoever did Ken in Cairns brakes have sharpened up the pencil on their invoices since then.

Have only ridden a couple of bikes with ABS and never had the ABS kick in. Perhaps this is because I am used to having bikes with no ABS and if you brake too hard there can be negative consequences.
How many of you blokes who read this thread have ABS equipped bikes and as a matter of course just slam on the brakes and let the ABS do it's thing with reckless abandon knowing your wheels wont lock up?.

All my road bikes now have ABS, the last bike I sold VFR 800 didn't have ABS but had linked brakes. I would have given up ABS on the Harley if it had brakes like that bike. I guess I try not to ride on the road like I need to rely on ABS, and it you are stopping at the rate ABS is coming on it your stopping really fast, that would get pretty tiring for me on a 4 hour ride. I have only had ABS come on once and I was doing about 40km/h and a car pulled straight out on my left without looking my direction. Id prefer to have a bike with it and ride not to rely on it.

I got mine done for $120 for front and rear about 2 years ago at HD.

The best thing about ABS is you can smash that front brake lever REGARDLESS of the road surface or adhesion levels and know that its going to stop you in the shortest possible time. You would have to be a very aggressive road rider to trigger the front ABS on a modern bike today due to safety features not limited too but including 6 axis IMU.
HD ABS is a very basic system on their bikes and with my ABS equipped Street Glide can easily activate the rear brake ABS by simply applying the rear brake and hitting a undulation on the road.
